I'm more concerned that this balloon, the size of three buses, flew over Canada before entering US airspace and what do we hear about it while over us ? Crickets.

I think an amphibious invasion of Taiwan is a practical impossibility. DDay over the Formosa Straight? In this day and age? With Uncle Sams Navy hovering nearby.
Very challenging.

Some sort of attempted blockade though seems a possibility.

They're awake and talking about it now. Canadian Armed Forces is looking at a second potential incident. (presumably over Canadian Airspace - since they just tweeted this out an hour ago)

A high-altitude surveillance balloon was detected and its movements are being actively tracked by NORAD.

Canadians are safe and Canada is taking steps to ensure the security of its airspace, including the monitoring of a potential second incident.

NORAD, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, and other partners have been assessing the situation and working in close coordination.

Canada’s intelligence agencies are working with American partners and continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard Canada’s sensitive information from foreign intelligence threats.

We remain in frequent contact with our American allies as the situation develops.

I don't see anything unusual going on in the sky above us right now, but there is some flight tracking to show they may have been monitoring the 1st balloon over the Kootenay the other day.





Neither of those are official sources. The first is a meteorologist attempting to back track the first balloon through weather models and the second is an OSINT plane spotter that noticed some unusual activity. If I were going to take a guess at where balloon 1 is right now, I'd say middle of nowhere Kansas. (heading to somewhere between Hutchinson and Dodge) Just a hunch based on a couple E-3B Sentry orbits and a couple KC-46a's that are a little closer together than I usually see them.

Surveillance Balloon from China? Call me a little skeptical at this point. I mean, if this is what China is willing to show you they can see from their satellite images, imagine what they're really capable of.

I believe it started 3 years ago (China developed and spread covid worldwide), continues today with numerous countries dealing with high inflation and supply issues.

Stick me in the "still somewhat skeptical about it all" camp. There's a balloon that NORAD, Canada and the USA took an interest in, be sure, but I'm still thinking there's either a little more going on, or a whole lot less.



Don't see how that is anything other than a balloon. Dependent on the Jetstream to move it around and so far, that's exactly what it appears to be doing. If tomorrow, this thing is somehow heading towards Richmond, Virginia and not the gap between Wilmington and Charleston... then, yeah I'll be far less skeptical.

Last comment I heard about the second balloon is that it was over Latin America. There's certainly nothing in our skies to indicate something going on. (But, that could just be a "they" figured out how "we" watch what "they" do, type of situation.)

Two days? 6 days that I'm aware of, probably more. (Just to be clear in NORAD airspace, not US airspace.)

Pretty much over at this point. Both the F-22's (callsign SNIPER) have cleared out of the area. The tankers are gone and all that remains is a single Eurocopter down on the deck bouncing above the waves.

My assessment, FWIW, a whole lot less was going on.
