Strip them of the Status Card

Post by BoB76 »

I think that Natives who allow white man to use their status number should have their cards and tax rights removed. I seen a news report where someone bought a hot tub and used a status card to save the tax. Now the hot tub dealer won't allow warranty because the person who paid for it isn't considered the original owner because it was purchased by a Native. I was considering buying a hot tub from them and am seriously considering my options as they are a business who allowed this tax fraud to happen in the first place.

If the government were to yank the status card of the offenders then it would set an example. The funny thing was that the person on the news quickly admitted to having been part of a tax fraud.

I gotta disagree with BoB this time. I think the white man should face criminal charges of fraud, as well as a civil suit from the status card holder because he took advantage of him. I also think the status card holder should sue the provincial government and the federal government under the human rights code and the Constitution because they allowed him to be discriminated against by the white man ;-).

IMHO The Status Cards should be pulled completely. Why should they get a break in taxes? Give me a break!!!!! :purefury:

Well.... I agree with the white man getting in trouble too. But, why would you think the Native should sue because of being taken advantage of?

I may be wrong Bob but i think you've missed the subtlety of Nabs' humour. note the wink-wink at the end.

What i've always got a chuckle about are those folks who have tapped into the legal percentage of native blood required to get their status for the sole purpose of being elligible for the benefits offered. Folks who have never been active in the 'first nation" community and who are "white" by every other standard but who figure they can cash in on the "genetic lottory" in the system.

My father being a Metis would probably allow me to pursue that route as well but it just doesn't seem right since i don't consider myself a part of that community or culture.

My views are a bit more radical - get rid of the privileges, status cards, status rights, bonuses, reservations, etc. all together. Nobody needs it. Are we all supposed to be equal?

Because we like to consider ourselves as a truely multicultural society it should only be fair that if we are going to give special rights, privileges and land to one ethnic group then we should be doing the same for every ethic group.

I am totally with you on that one. One set of rules/standards/laws etc. for all people in our country please.
