I think of that experiment whenever people go along with cruel or environmentally destructive government policy, even knowing the policy is causing genuine harm.

I think the takeaway isn't how "those people that are not me are doing bad things". I think the takeaway is "wow, anyone is susceptible to influence, I wonder in what ways I yield to authority and do cruel things?"

More than one takeaway - those two are in no way mutually exclusive. He had other experiments about manipulation and influence.
