Canning
Do you can, what do you you can and do you want to rid yourself of some?
Never looked fun to me, my Mommy slaveed... however, I do so enjoy canned goods. From veggies to jams.. you had me at canned
Lived next door to a Man who canned fish - it was hmm, tad sketchy but I enjoyed it
Thinking carrots, crab apples and jam ( s)
OH, and never turn down soups, I do like squash soup, and Celery

Re: Canning
I've had a canner for many years but haven't used it in probably 20 years. Seems like a lot of work to me, too! That's why I made salsas that can be frozen.normaM wrote: ↑Sep 16th, 2023, 3:08 pm Do you can, what do you you can and do you want to rid yourself of some?

Norma, Norma…you have a garden area at your place. Why so reluctant to get out there and plant what you love to eat?normaM wrote: ↑Sep 16th, 2023, 3:08 pm Do you can, what do you you can and do you want to rid yourself of some?

Do we need to set a bomb to go off under your butt to get it moving?

Re: Canning
For numerous decades growing up my Mom had huge collection of glass jars to do canning with. All of a sudden canning became popular and jar & lid company altered the size opening of the jars.
No more rubber rings for glass lids, my Mom was very PO’ed having to purchase all new jars.

I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.

It wouldn't be worth it for me Cats. I did tomato plants once, suddenly awash iin the darn things and foisted them off to the neighbours
I still remember my Mommy's joy when she had the garden sodded over!
Maybe now people can for the pleasure it brings them not because they have to.

Right. If there’s no pleasure in doing it, no point in pushing it.

You could have made tomato sauce and canned it for use in the Winter.normaM wrote: ↑Sep 18th, 2023, 4:50 am It wouldn't be worth it for me Cats. I did tomato plants once, suddenly awash iin the darn things and foisted them off to the neighbours

Or green tomato pickle relish. Mmmmm
It can be a lot of work but the results are worth it.
We have shelves full of Dill Pickles, Pickled Onions, Peaches, Jam, Apple sauce.
It's so cold I'm almost hoping for a heated argument with my Wife!

I loathe tomato sauce. I'd have been eating tomato relish for 2 decades!
My Baba did not bestest dill pickles, never tasted them like that again. Maybe cause they were Yorkton Sask cucs :)
Bet canned sausages are tasty

^^^My son and his friends of over 25 years (6 in the group) decided it was better to play up their culinary skills than go traipsing from store to store trying to find the perfect Christmas gift. Each person makes enough for the others and whatever they want for their own use.
My son is the pickling, relish/salsa, dry rubs, and jam/jelly guy. So far he's done pickled cauliflower, pickled beets, Giardiniera, pickled carrots, and pickled hot cherry peppers. Jam/jelly include blueberry jam, peach jam, peach/ginger jam, pepper jelly (non-spicy and hot), and mint jelly.
One guy does flavoured olive oils and vinegars, Another does individual pot pies, lasagna, Shepherd's pie, meatloaf, Swedish meatballs, Another who likes baking does cookies, muffins, and small pies like apple, pumpkin, peach, raisin, blueberry, pecan.

Going to have to find a bean pickling recipe. Hundreds of them. I believe they drank the smoke and reproduced like crazy.

Re: Canning
You can get 20lb of tomatoes in Keremeos fruit stands for $5, so you gotta do something with them. Canning is what I've done, but my dad usually gives me so many of his tomatoes that I make salsa with the ones I buy, canning them, but maybe I should try freezing this year.
EDIT; This is by far the best bean crop I've ever had, and everyone else is saying the same. I wonder why?

Re: Canning
Early on in my canning career I bought a pressure canner -felt it was the only safe way to can food. It held 7 quarts or 14 pint jars. I canned tomatoes, cherries, peaches, pears as well as salmon, chicken and once I canned a tuna and a run of mussels. Pickles, relish..... I get tired now even thinking of all the fruit and tomato picking and canning I dd, I still have a pressure canner but am relying on y daughter to have the energy to use it .....

Overrun with beans. I have a theory the ash fertilized the soil in just the right way for them.Glacier wrote: ↑Sep 18th, 2023, 5:10 pm You can get 20lb of tomatoes in Keremeos fruit stands for $5, so you gotta do something with them. That pressure cooker sure earned its keep. Hope your daughter carries on the tradition!flamingfingers wrote: ↑Sep 18th, 2023, 5:59 pm Early on in my canning career I bought a pressure canner -felt it was the only safe way to can food.
