Our Rhubarb plants are growing like crazy. I think about 8cm this week alone.

For once I have/had the opposite problem. My wife keeps asking if I'm feeling alright.

Try half of one bed and if the malaise still persists, there is netflix.

I'm throwing peas in today. Won't be the earliest though.
And five early tulips are blooming now. Violets, some bulbs with blue flowers, not Grape Hyacinths, something else, and all kinds of plants are exploding up out of the ground now.

I have pruned most of my roses, and all my raspberries and blackberries. I look like I *bleep* off a cat.

Tried the leather & manmade fabric garden gloves they have at Costco - they're nice! Only medium and small though. Fortunately, the medium fit me.

I was given three types of radicchio seeds the other day, now there's some planted in a container on our balcony.
Probably better to plant them sooner as they don't like hot weather but this was my first chance. Next year they'll go in sooner.

Planted lettuce, radishes and scallions last week. Checked on them today, dry as bones so quickly watered, and lo and behold, radish and lettuce are showing, and green onion planted from root ends of grocery bought, are pumping out the tasty slivers of green too.

Will plant the carrots this week and that way, get 2 or 3 crops before fall.

Green beans will follow later after I remove radishes but this year, I blanche them before freezing. Learned a good lesson there.

Another teachable was never again to plant rutabagas as their odour is intolerable to me, and the leaves are an insect attractant like no other.



I was gifted a lot of fresh parsley last year which i normally dried in microwave. Last year I took a different approach. I cleaned and snipped off the curly green tops then immersed them in small cups of water and froze. It worked. Came out lovely to use in soups and stews with green colour and flavour intact, unlike the dried counterpart. Will do this again this summer, only more.

Btw, the small cups I used were those small yogurt containers instead of discarding them. Perfecto.

Dug up my gooseberry and passed it along to my sister in law. Thorns, I was done with the thorns. I am so done with sharp plants. The only ones I am keeping are my mini-roses (not too much trouble) and my climber that I got from QK (that one is a lot of trouble, but it's gorgeous and the perfume is amazing).

I am way behind on garden this year. Cold plants are not in (except what self seeded). I haven't amended or even weeded yet. I am away with my friend this weekend so no gardening happening then. I did ask my friend to start some tomato plants for me and mom in law. I also will probably buy peppers and paste tomatoes.

Okay, up to date on roses. The only rose that thrived was the climber (rambler?) I got from QK all those years ago - it's a beast.

Every other rose bush is starting over at ground level. Well, there's another climber beside the beast that is alive, if not thriving. That one is about 5 ft tall.

Nice to have this rain, though, eh? My lawn is actually greening up a bit!

I'm heading out to take up a shovel full to see how far down the rain is making it. I got to wet down the compost bins. I've done some transplanting lately and must put in the leeks and onions I bought. Potatoes too, I plan to put them in a new section.

There's hope for the roses. Last spring I thought one of my roses was dead. It came to life pushing out new growth near the base a few weeks after the one beside it.

I hope that happens for the orange rose. Bad enough it's twin did not survive years ago.

I got the onions planted last night and today it's the leeks. I never planted sweet white onions before so they're all new to try out. Doing lots of weed control already too.

Went to water seedlings today and noticed radishes are 1” high, lettuces still tiny. I planted all of my old romaine seeds (8 years, 9 years old?) so have lots to share around to other gardeners at my community garden.

Planted 3 rows of carrots, one of parsley, green bunching onions and more radishes. The store bought onion bulbs i planted are the round leaf type, not flat leaf as they tend to be tough and only virtue is for shipping purposes. I see young needle leaves shooting from them now, so they will be ready to nip off for omelettes in near future.

Again this year, a number of beautiful, sleek-sided quail inhabit that garden area, looking for tidbits to eat and dry beds for their dust baths. Must pick up those green nets to keep them at bay.

Added. Carrot seeds I bought are coated and dyed bright pink. What a pleasure to plant as they are visible and easier to handle than the normal, uncoated, tiny brown seeds of old.
