Re: Growing/sharing/learning to garden: 2022
I bought fencing today, just came in from the garden. I have fenced off all dog-dangerous areas. I'm not sure about actually growing stuff, but I do like fresh radishes so probably them, at least.
Oh, who am I kidding? I will probably cave completely and plant at least tomatoes and beans.
I have hopes of actually getting moving on the greenhouse project. If that happens I shall resurrect that thread and post updates.

I got the patio furniture out. The ground still looks too frozen to dig in yet.Queen K wrote: ↑Mar 6th, 2022, 12:17 pm It's getting close to time thinking about what is going into the gardens for food security, er, growing stuff.
I had success with growing tomatoes in one area that needs a break from tomatoes, so I've decided to plant them along the side of the sunny hot side of the garage and back fence. Garlic is coming up, we removed abit of the cover to give it more light and air by now. Store bought garlic started to sprout so we planted five cloves indoors. All if it took and will be replanted in the gardens soon.
The front area where the tomatoes have been need to be put into potatoes. Yes, I've decided to trench dig and replant using plenty of compost. They do not do well in my raised beds. Years of digging out nothing under big leaves have taught me to go back to the ground. Peas go in soon. Last year I staggered pea planting with great effect.
I am removing some flowers in favour of berry plants. Never thought I'd say that but here we are. I am experimenting with planting lettuce in a few new places too. See how more shade does to keep it from bolting.
I am removing certain raspberry canes from the front. They struggle there too much. Other raspberry canes overtake in one area, can't win. But we got heat domed out of raspberries last year and am wondering if the same will occur. What are the chances?
Not fooling around with exotic stuff this year. Tried and true is the motto.

In the next week or so I'll assemble the raised garden beds, decide the best location for each and start filling with soil.

We have an abundance of weeds in our garden beds.
They are free for those who wish to pick!

Which weeds?
I'm learning that dandelions and purslane are actually good weeds to have.

I have tulips poking through!
And that blasted quack grass - why is it always that garbage that keeps poking up?
I'd rather have dandelions - at least those bring up nutrients from below and can be eaten . . .

We've got tulips poking through also. I noticed them the other day, even the tulips on the north side of the house are showing.
Added. If I was a tulips I would retreat back under the dirt. It's 1C and snowing.

So it is warming up, albeit slowly.

Yes, now is optimum time for planting peas. Plant at 1-1/2” deep so roots have plenty of time to grow and establish prior to unexpected hot spells. Better survival rate and better crop pickings.
Also a great time to plant radishes, green onions and lettuce seeds. Plant them a little deeper than package recommendations for same reason as above.
I can barely wait for lettuce. So sick of those tasteless things sold in grocery stores for a princely sum. My last pkg of romaine must have been stomped on to fit in the bin. Pkg coverings do just that, cover up the browning, damaged leaves.
Paid $5.00 for something I’d toss in the compost if it came from my garden.

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

The Greenery is open.
With great willpower, I did NOT buy yet more bulbs, and I did not buy any violas, pansies, or primulas. I even held off on buying another fall raspberry cane.
I got a snake plant for the house. And about $20 worth of seeds (those have gone up in price :/).

Re: Growing/sharing/learning to garden: 2022
I cleared a little garden space for bunching onions (scallions), daikon and french breakfast radishes. When I get some more time, more cool weather crops will go in. Kohlrabi, for one.
But no parsnips. I bought parsnip seeds, in my splurge at the Greenery. I can't find the parsnip seeds.
I was going to plant the under my plum tree. Apparently, they are a good companion plant for fruit trees, that and garlic.

I found a lettuce seen package stuck in a drawer. Should I stick in the freezer for overnight before planting it?
