Re: Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees
My second planting of radishes are now within 2 days of harvesting, so am now soaking green bean seeds to plant when radishes pulled.
Finally, someone else at garden today so quickly gifted her with 50 or so well underway romaine plants. Still have oodles to give away. If no one else there, I will pull up plants, already 4” high and use them in a salad. They need to be thinned out soon.
I think it’s now safe to plant toms, but cover them if it’s a cold night . I see others have planted theirs with no ill effects visible.
Anyone else have toms in the ground?

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

Mine are ready to transplant but with three consecutive days of 30 or higher starting tomorrow I'm concerned that may get too hot.Catsumi wrote: ↑May 9th, 2024, 7:28 pm My second planting of radishes are now within 2 days of harvesting, so am now soaking green bean seeds to plant when radishes pulled.

Sheer curtain fabric to prevent sunscald, keeps the plant warm at night, fends off insects, keeps soil from drying out too fast.Babba_not_Gump wrote: ↑May 9th, 2024, 7:57 pmMine are ready to transplant but with three consecutive days of 30 or higher starting tomorrow I'm concerned that may get too hot.Catsumi wrote: ↑May 9th, 2024, 7:28 pm My second planting of radishes are now within 2 days of harvesting, so am now soaking green bean seeds to plant when radishes pulled.

When Halloween rolls around, use it as a shroud to scare the hell out of garden raiders

Plants are in the ground now - I still need to pick up some more paste tomatoes at the Greenery. I have my sheers up so it looks like my garden is haunted.
I went to Ogi's for the first time this weekend, what a neat greenhouse. Mrs. Ogi is a card, she is into everything and you can tell she's the boss. She was knocking down prices on plants she wasn't happy with (apparently didn't look healthy enough?) and pruning your plants for you while you were in line to pay
Her daughter was on till and you know that long-suffering sigh you get from a kid when mom is telling them what-for? Yeah, heard that a bit XD
Got a few plants from a place on Daniel Dr in Lake Country - was advertised on the FB garden group page. A young kid grows & sells them.

Okay, went to the Greenery today with the kids - they bought me a hanging basket, each
and I bought paste tomatoes, and thyme.

Weeds.
I got the rest of my plants in the ground yesterday. Now all I need to do is plant my beans (not counting the volunteers that I relocated - they rarely do well) and my last batch of seeds (2 types of greens that are like spinach, but do well in the heat, supposedly).

I ripped out the last of my radishes and planted carrots and cuc seeds. Pals picked me up 7 curly parsley plants at the Greenery, that when turned out of their containers, turned out to be 28! What a bargain! Tucked them into my small garden box, everywhere. I will have plenty of it to freeze in water later this summer.
Green beans that went into the ground have appeared above it.
Glad it’s a cool day. It’ll help settle in that parsley just fine.

Re: Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees
Something has been chewing on my green beans. They aren't even up an inch and the tops are disappearing.
But everything else looks good. I transplanted carrots for the first time ever, also onions. Garlic are about 2 feet tall, just waiting for the scapes to appear. A couple of patty pans have appeared. No kale this year and I've cut back on beets.
I put in two "cuore di bue" tomato plants and one red pear tomato. A friend brought the seeds over from Italy, started them and gave them to me. He also gave me a sweet million and a Roma principe borsche to try. They're at a friend's house. There's no room left in our garden.

Never saw a quail in all the years I spent in (spit ) Kamloops, but I would suspect a wormy chewer.Bsuds wrote: ↑May 21st, 2024, 3:11 pmmaybe Quail?Babba_not_Gump wrote: ↑May 21st, 2024, 2:46 pm Something has been chewing on my green beans. Let us know if you locate the culprit, Babs. Try digging lightly into soil around bean sprouts, see what appears. I use an old paint roller (roller removed) and use the single hook to explore with

No Quail in Kamloops? You're lucky as they raid our garden all the time in Kelowna!

I now live in Vernon where the quail are numerous and forever digging out dust bath holes for themselves in mine and others garden boxes. Can't say they do much else in the way of damage, ripping up seeds of course, or maybe I just don’t see it, as I have a soft spot in my heart for them. Too damned cute.
Gardeners are plagued with one thing or another.
Babs…tried transplanting carrots ONCE, no success. Report back.

Yeah, most likely little crawly bugs.Catsumi wrote: ↑May 21st, 2024, 6:40 pmI now live in Vernon where the quail are numerous and forever digging out dust bath holes for themselves in mine and others garden boxes. We had quail moving into east Kamloops five or six years ago.
I went looking for pics and found a memory from three years ago today, a family walking through our patio. It's a video so can't post it.
I'll check out the carrots tomorrow. They looked good yesterday.
Last week we were out to Desert Hills Ranch in Ashcroft, picked up a tray of carrots and onions ready for transplanting. We'll see.

Something is eating some of my tomatoes
I will have to replace 2, so far. Peppers are in pots this year (except for a few) and we will see how they do.

I haven't failed until I quit.

Just came back from the garden, carrots are doing well, but only three pole beans may have survived whatever was nibbling on them. I'll have to plant more.
Transplanted carrots and onions.
