Re: Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees
Oh man, I thought I was alone
In 5 decades of gardening I have never seen such a screwed up year as this. Like you ^^^^ it started off just fine, then noticed bean plants didn’t appear, blamed quail (maybe rightly), tried again twice more with netting over top. Seeds had sprouted already from presoaking, but just didn’t want to grow, so blamed self for not enough watering (I have to carry water to box and with a bad hip, couldn’t keep up to moisture loss from the heat). Tried again, no luck. Then I blamed the seed.
Carrots always were a winner for me…this year, first crop was thin and sorrowful. Tried planting again on Aug 15, a sure fire for fall crop normally. Hardly any seeds sprouted and what seedlings appeared are so small they’ll not ever make it to fall pull out time.
Cucs are producing but are “wet”. By the time I ream out the inner core, hardly any cuc left for salads.
Even the parsley is not up to snuff, usually luxurious and fastgrowing….this year, have to give live offerings sacrified to the plants by the light of the moon
I didn’t plant Zuc or toms this year thinking there was no room. Wrong.
I am no quitter, but with hip and back giving me misery, today I have given up the fight for so little in return. I will pull out what’s left when I have the skookum to do it.

Sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice. There’s a certain point at which ignorance becomes malice, at which there is simply no way to become THAT ignorant except deliberately and maliciously.

Once again will be roasting tomatoes again as the bumper crop is just loading in.
Cukes finally got to the pickable stage: bitter aftertaste. Very disappointed. Beans forming, will be pickable in five days or so.
Squash, omigod save me from squash.

Regardless of who "wins" an election, they always are up against a Silent Elite. Do you believe the extreme poor who voted for Trump ever thought their non-profit support would be slashed right out from under them?

Ok, Nastursium Salt. Peppery right in the salt. Not a substitute for pepper entirely but could be good without the sneeze factor.

A bit off, but what garden furniture do you all have? Wood, rattan? Which one is the best, in your opinion?
My wife and I are thinking about getting rattan. Something like this: https://www.gardencentreshopping.co.uk/ ... ral-rattan
What do you all think?

I have a metal table and chairs. The chairs are sprung, so they can rock a bit. I really enjoy them :) Plus, they stand up to a lot. They are on a covered deck, and so out of the direct weather. I have a deck box as well, for putting things away. That's resin, though.

Re: Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees

So, being (highly) irritated with the worst garden results ever, I stopped watering my garden box about 2 weeks ago. I knew “clean up” day was approaching, so I jumped the gun and did it yesterday.
Pulled up the cucs and found several, nice firm ones, and then pulled up what few bean plants that survived whatever was going on this summer, got enough for 3 suppers. Not much, but better than the zero i was expecting
These cucs were 100% better than the ones that were well-watered….there’s a message there for us, to cut back on water making the plant “think” death is a-coming, so better produce offspring NOW.
I didn’t plant toms this year but know for a factoid in my experience, that water shortage leads to a meatier, tastier tomato to one that is gushy with water from over abundance

I just learned of a new to-me variety of pepper, Italian Orange.

I might have been growing that this year - an unknown from the kid in Lake Country. The plant was loaded with peppers, and the night before I harvested ruddy critters ate most of them off the plantQueen K wrote: ↑Sep 27th, 2024, 7:22 pm I just learned of a new to-me variety of pepper, Italian Orange.![]()

I have ONE ripe untouched pepper from that plant.

I have a rose blooming, and autumn gold raspberries ripening (love the second crop!) - been eating them for a week.
I picked all my peppers and green tomatoes. So very few tomatoes, this was a terrible year for me. I have 2 beds cleared, one bed put away for the winter. And a whole lot to go. So today, off to do wedding prep for next weekend instead

Although - hoses are blown out! First time in years we did it ahead of the first frost.

I haven't failed until I quit.

Re: Gardens 2024: Flowers/Vegetables/Bushes/Trees
I pulled all the cucumber plants. For a late planting from seed they did very well. The variety of sweet potato I got a the end of season was a complete waste of time. I will pull the green bean vines next. I am still hanging on for tomatoes though. Will tarp them soon.
I have to dig up Raspberry canes and clear some spots for new raised beds. Cutting back on raspberries is the right thing to do right now.

The garden is cleaned up and I planted the garlic today. About 70 of them. Now it's time to move on to other hobbies.

That's me today, the rest is going. Yesterday was cleaning out an entire bed of Black Krim tomato plants, we ate well and if the green ones ripen, we still will into the next few weeks.

Planted a full raised bed with top quality garlic cloves. Interplanted smaller garlic with some strawberries.
Cleaned up stuff and I'm adding to the compost bin like crazy, but no tomato stuff is in there.

We want to get new furniture. Saw that someone mentioned rattan, and I pretty much like the furniture from https://www.gardencentreshopping.co.uk/. I'm thinking of getting a set like the ones from there.
