Why isn't Max Domi a Torono Maple Leaf?

Postby Straight Shooter » Oct 30th, 2015, 6:29 pm

After beng drafted in the first round (12th) by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Draft, Max Domi had a breakthrough season playing for the London Knights last year scoring 32 goals and and adding 70 assists. But it was his play during the World Junior Championship held in Toronto and Montreal in 2014/15 that hockey's fans caught a glimps of how talented this kid really was. That's why as a long time Leaf supporter that I was hoping that somehow the Leafs could make a deal in somehow getting Domi into a Leaf uniform. Maybe the pressure of playing in Toronto where father Tie was a fan favorite would have been too much but the chances of Max wearing a Leaf uniform now after his impressive start (4-6 -10points) in ten games seem out of the question. Mark Hunter should have used his influence with his connections to the London Knights to have the Leafs trade Mitch Marner who was selected 4th over-all this year in a deal that the Leafs should had made no matter what the price.

London Knight's don't pick which teams get to pick draft eligible players, unfortunately Max was pickup 12 overall and highest pick Toronto had that year was 21.
As I see it the chemistry that Max Domi & Anthony Duclair have is very good, could Max have had the same with current Maple Leafs players maybe or maybe not. If Toronto wanted him they would have gone after him, but if the cost (not in money) future TML prospects was to high then it would not be worth it.

Here is example: Blue Jays gave away large chunk of their farm club prospects to make a run for Cup this season, failed to do so. Now that loss of future players will come back to haunt the new management team in the years to come.
(Back to NHL: since every team works same Cap, all teams have are their future prospects that does not go against the Cap( those that are actual signed to contracts)

The rebuild is happening in Arizona it looking good

Footnote:
Max Domi has to be damn careful every day he is 1 of only 3 players with type 1 diabetes in NHL. So maybe teams are not ready to take on that risk.

Yes, but Mark Hunter being the owner/president/gm of the London Knight and now as assistant GM of the Leafs pushed to get Marner selected and from what I've seen Domi is pegged as a better player even with his type 1 diabetes. I'm just interested to know if the Leafs brass made any attempts to acquire Domi even as far back as 2013.

Since Mark Hunter was not in TML management until October of 2014 & Mitchell Marner was eligible & drafted 2 years after Max was.

All the current management team is new since 2013 draft

Because his dad sucked and nostalgia is not a good tool to use when drafting.

Who knows, maybe Domi wouldn't want to be a maple leaf?

I'm not expecting much out of Leafs this year, what I do expect is changes / movement. At both the trade deadline & next July 1 free agency.
Neither goaltender has actually stepped up so far, as example.

Your right Gordon, Toronto's duo of Bernier and Reimer has not been up to snuff. Last season when the Leafs were in a playoff position before New Years the Leafs were winning when they were getting surperb goaltending. This year with a start of 1-7-2 nothing is working out. Max Domi was pretty well raised in Maple Leaf Gardens and the ACC, to say he wouldn't have want to be Maple Leaf blue is ridiculous. Ask Connor McDavid if he would have been exciting to be selected by the Leafs if they had won the draft lottery this past June and you would have had the same answer.

You get that answer for any O6 team.

Buds current standings is understandable, as for the Ducks thats head scratcher. Unless the players want Bruce Boudreau gone.

That Anaheim situation is a definate head scratcher because the Ducks can not score this season for some reason. Boudreaux like most successful coaches who's players don't perform maybe see his days numbered if the team does not get out of this. Hopefully coming home after this road trip will turn things around but they will have to do this without the services of Cory Perry who is expected to be out of action for two to three weeks.

"No matter what the price" isn't really the way things work in the NHL, unless, as a GM, you want part of that price to be losing your job.

If the Leafs had wanted to make a move to get Max, trading up in the 2013 draft would have been the only logical way to do it. Everyone would like to add a blue chip prospect via a trade, but it rarely happens. They are hard to value, both for the seller and the buyer. No one wants to take on that kind of risk. And besides...why would Arizona have been willing to move him? Do you think they didn't know what they had?
My fervent hope is that you and your tax dollars will be reunited in the afterlife.
