This crap weather has let me drag my reloading kit out.
Been a while but going to load some 308 for my son with the Nosler 165 grain partition ( use the same in my 06) Have a Remington 308 police special so want to load some 168 gr target rounds as well.
I have several books and articles, a variety of powder and primers.
Therapy for me sitting still and concentrating, same when I'm salmon fishing.

Anyone collect Marlins ? Love to get a nice JM stamped 45-70

The one I tried was a 45.70 Sharps. 13 lb barrel & 3 stage breach. 500 grn, paper wrapped bullet....WOW....what a rifle.

My Dad wants to give me some big bore hand guns as he is no longer using them. Has all reg papers and I have acquisition for restricted firearms. Where do I start with getting them in my name and bring them home? Do I need to belong to a club as well? Use to many years ago, just let it slip when life got in the way.

I better like them as I am a gunsmith/gun builder. My love is long distance precision shooting. I was quite active in F-class, but now I do it for fun. I love getting lots out of little; while many believe you need big cartridges to hunt or shoot long distances, truth is it is all about being able to hit your target. My love is a little gem called the 6BR Norma. 105 grain 6mm bullet pushed by about 30 grains of Varget, and you can smack gongs at a mile. Most people forget that there isn’t any game animal in North America that hasn’t been taken with a 30-30, 303, or 30-06, and with open sights. To my mind, all a 300 Win Mag is good for is burning powder, barrel life, and creating flinch.

I'm just getting started in the long range shooting. Bought a 700P .308 and 26" barrel. I have a set of dies for the .308 and plan to reload. I bought a couple of boxes of match Barnes 168 and 180? grn. bullets when the outdoor store was closing down in Westbank. I also have various powders. Did up some .308 rounds for my son who is just getting started in hunting. Started at 43 gr Varget with the 165 grn. Nosler partition. Worked up to 45 grn I believe it was for his .308 Savage 99 lever action. 5 rounds each to see what groups best in his rifle.

It also inflicts inhumane wounds when shooters think all that matters is how big their cartridge is, and forsake the importance of actually having the precision to be able to hit what they are shooting. Remember, the little .223 is used world wide by NATO troops for hunting humans that are about the same size as a deer and they are lethal to 800+ yards. It' all about shot placement.

In the olden days... ( I hunted a lot in the 80's) I believed a 06 was one of the best all round rifles for hunting. Reasonable to good accuracy with bullets from 150 to 185 grain. Friends used 150 for deer/ moose where a 200 yard shot might have been it and then used a bigger bullet when in areas where longer shots might be taken.
Personally, I never shot enough( 40-60 rnds/yr) to feel comfortable at taking a shot much past 2-250 yards with a 165 grain bullet in my 06.
I have met hunters who do shoot hundreds or even thousands of rounds and I believe them when they can hit a skeet target( stationary on the ground) at 7-800 yards. The bull Elk racks on the walls attest to the passion and skill.
I tip my hat to those that do spend the time and have the skill set to shoot well at 500 yards and further. Perhaps one day...

A 300 Win Mag I've always thought would be the caliber of choice if one expected long range elk , goat, (don't agree on trophy hunt) or bear. 700 Remington I believe is pretty accurate at longer range as well.
As Obtunded mentioned practice with your caliber of choice is the bottom line to have a clean kill.

Had a chance at a fair size mule this pass season. But with glare from the morning sun and a bit too far of a range for my skill, and package rifle scope, I didn't feel comfortable taking the shot.
Still love my ought six though! Just need to upgrade that scope for next time.

I bought a 17 HMR and love the accuracy. Box of 50 is a little more expensive, but love punching tight groups in paper.

Much interest in this round at the Kamloops target Sports?
