12 volt winch for boat trailer

Postby Merry » Jul 18th, 2018, 11:46 am

We have a 17 ft Bayliner, and would like to install a 12 volt winch on the boat trailer. Just wondering if anyone has ever actually done this, and what would be involved? Any tips?

We're considering mounting the winch where the current winch is, and the battery in a battery box on the trailer tongue. Will that work?

There may be issues if the battery becomes submerged. It may be better to power it via the trailer connection to the towing vehicle. That way, only one battery instead of two and it will be recharged without maintenance.
A light duty winch is all that would be required and available at Canada tire or Princess Auto.
