What's Missing From This Election Discourse....

Post by Different Drummer »

...is a sense of humour. There sure is plenty of vitriol, invective, revilement, sarcasm, tirades, tongue-lashing, vilification, vituperation, accusation, berating, blame, castigation, censure, condemnation and denunciation.

How about a little musical fun, to lighten the mood? Think of suitable duets for any pair of candidates to sing together. I'll start things off:

Joe Strocen and Carol Zanon: "I've Seen Fire and I've Seen Rain" -- James Taylor

Elva Webber and Peter Haslock: "My Little Town" -- Simon & Garfunkel

Doug Findlater and Adam Last singing "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover" Simon & Garfunkel

The problem is all inside your head, he said to Adam
The answer is easy if you take it logically
I’d like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover

Carol said it’s really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore I hope my meaning won’t be lost or misconstrued
So I repeat myself, at the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover, fifty ways to leave your lover

Chorus:
Just slip out the back, Gord, make a new plan, Doug
Don’t need to be coy, Duane, just listen to me
Hop on the bus, David, don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Adam, and get yourself free

(repeats 2x)

She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said, I appreciate that, then would you please explain about the fifty ways

She said, why don’t we both just sleep on it tonight
And I believe, in the morning you’ll begin to see the light
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover, fifty ways to leave your lover

Oh yeah? Well I wrote my own little ditty... It goes something like this...

(and before the posts start flying back at me, this is just in fun... Quite frankly I'm enjoying the break from the battle and getting a chance to have a laugh on here...)

Sung to the tune “Come Together” by The Beatles

Here comes old angus-og he’s postin’ crazy
He got Westbank fever, got his facts all hazy
He been tryin’ hard to make his plea
Those vocal Westbank ad-vo-cates just won’t let us be...

He got no motive he just tryin’ to fix it
He just makin’ motions, but instead just mixed it
He say "I’m can-ad-man, listen to me,
We can all make this thing happen you just got to believe”...

Come together right now... Vote with me...

Some start a movement, to get folks to thinkin’
Vote for West Kelowna, now the forum's sinkin'
Poor old Angus-og he's gone beserk...
Election day is coming, will the stra-te-gy work?...

Come together right now... Vote with me....

Now there’s a group and they got all their donors,
Doin’ all they can to make it West Kelowna
And ol’ Angus-og he’s still cryin’ foul...
But when it’s West Kelowna you know he’ll be our pal...

Come together right now... Vote with me...
"The road to hell is paved with concrete."

And, for an encore I thought I should write one specially for our own resident journalissimo, Mr. Rob Turner...

Sung to the tune of “Paperback Writer” by The Beatles

Newspaper writer... Newspaper writer...

Hey Rob can you tell me, can you have a look
After all the posts here could you write a book?
When the fight’s all over do you think we’ll win?
Can you tell me please because I know that you’re a newspaper writer,
Newspaper writer....

Is it history or does it just make sense?
How will all those vote who are on the fence?
Should we all fight harder or should we give up?
I just need to know and I know that you’re a newspaper writer,
Newspaper writer.

Newspaper writer... Newspaper writer.

There’s a thousand posts here give or take a few
Will you write again here in a day or two?
Have you got the insight on the inside track?
Can you write us back soon cause we know that you’re a newspaper writer,
Newspaper writer.

Will it be decided when the voting’s done?
Will the Westbank lobby take another run?
Will the Council members ever take a stand,
Do you have the scoop? After all you are a newspaper writer,
Newspaper writer.

Newspaper writer... Newspaper writer...

Newspaper writer... Newspaper writer...
Newspaper writer... Newspaper writer...
