The Stratford Festival says it is mourning the loss of a "rare artist" and one of its pioneers, Douglas Rain, who died at the age of 90 on Sunday morning.

Rain played a range of roles at the theatre including Malvolio in "Twelfth Night", the title role in "King John" and Prince Hal in "Henry IV, Part 1."

The festival said Rain "made an indelible mark on popular culture" as the voice of the computer, known as Hal 9000, in Stanley Kubrick’s film "2001: A Space Odyssey."

She had to play the cruel mother but in my opinion she had the best role. Especially when they made her play a bar girl in a city. Hilarious!

Thanks for all the fun memories on Little House on the Prairie Katherine MacGregor.

Penny Marshall, film director and TV's 'Laverne,' dies at 75.

Even without "Laverne & Shirley," Penny Marshall –who died Monday at 75 of complications from diabetes, her spokeswoman told CBS and the Los Angeles Times – would count as Hollywood royalty. She was the sister of late TV mogul Garry Marshall and the ex-wife of Rob Reiner, which ties her to two great comedy traditions.

More importantly, on her own she became one of the most successful female film directors of all time, with hits such as "Big," "Awakenings" and "A League of Their Own" to her credit.
