CHBC

Just wondering if I was one of the few who noticed that on CHBC this evening, instead of the local news from 5:30 to 6:00 PM tonight, the station showed the Global National News, and at 6:00 PM the same Global National News.

So did someone forget to throw a switch ?

Perhaps CHBC has seen the writing on the wall and are packing up.

It doesn't really matter, I guess. The 30 minutes of CHBC weekend evening news is normally comprised of 10 minutes of news from other affiliates, 5 minutes of weather, with someone pretending (talking like they experienced the weather they are reporting) to be local. Some ads and hey possibly some real local news, as long as there weren't too many ducklings crossing a roadway, or some other breaking news that took precedent.

Becoming a very sad product. Too bad, there are some good people there.

My guess is that the station is no longer the cash cow it once was. Yes, we also noticed that the usual 5:30 Sunday newscast wasn’t local but was Global National. I have found that I can get all of the local / provincial / national news in any 15 minute interval. Then, it’s all repeated ad infinitum. If I miss something really important, I can feel confident that it will still be “Breaking News” 3 days later!
After my 15 minutes of local news, I promptly switch to KTLA Los Angeles. Good news, much more entertaining, and no Pee-Wee Herman doing weather.

A couple of news items.

I was very sad to hear that Weather Anchor, Kasia Bodurka announced that today will be her last day at Global.

The odd time that I unwisely turn in CHBC news, I always fast forward though the weather segments by Peter "Pee Wee Herman" Quinlan, but on the odd occasion when Pee Wee isn't available and the weather segment is conducted by Kasia, I find myself riveted to the TV.

I think my crazy urge to watch the odd CHBC evening news program has been quelled. I guess you could say I mostly watched it out of morbid curiosity to see how many stumbles and mumbles, gaffs and outright occasions of complete incompetence the "crack" crew can put forth in a one hour news fiasco.

Last night did it for me.

I record the CHBC News, so, in the least I can fast forward through the Quinlan weather segments. As yesterday's program came on, the anchor was not a CHBC anchor, it was a Vancouver anchor. I checked,,, yes I had recorded CHBC. Oh well I guess something went wrong locally. So as the program continues, as does happen some segments are interesting and I listen, then <flicker> and mid sentence (actually mid word) a commercial comes on the screen. After the commercial there's Jamie Tawil, he continues on with a story, as though nothing has happened (I'm thinking, they are thinking, "if we just continue as though nothing has happened maybe nobody will notice"). So after we get into another news story, then as I get interested <flicker> and we're back to Global Vancouver.

That's when I decided no more watching even if it's just out of morbid curiosity. The old saying "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me" well I've been a fool more than twice, so it's on me.

Oh, and I did send the news director a question. Was he at all concerned when the reporter asked the local wildfire spokesperson "what is more of a concern, lighting or thunder" and yes it was a serious question. <crickets>

Bye bye CHBC, sure miss Mike Roberts and Rick Webber. They got out while the getting was good.
