PSA ... canning jars and/or lids

Post by oneh2obabe »

Just got back from getting jabbed in the arm then over to Home Hardware to pick up a few things ordered last week.

For those planning on doing any canning this year, there are shelves and shelves of canning jars in all sizes and boxes and boxes of lids.
Dance as if no one's watching, sing as if no one's listening, and live everyday as if it were your last.

Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.

Thanks, I have informed the canning Lady of the household.
I got Married because I was sick and tired of finishing my own sentences.
That's worked out great for me!

So therefore, a buck a jar? On average.

If someone was to stuff them with their own produce at a cost of ......near zero.......then it would be worth it.

Of course that scenario only applies to those that have a lavish estate surrounding their house on a 33 x 80 foot lot.
Pay for their own water consumption and put in 600 hrs of hard physical labour to grow their own produce every year.

Let's do the math together, shall we?

600 hrs labour @ $20/hr ... $12,000
100 jars @ $1ea ... $100
Fert./soil/pesticide/seed ... $100 +
Equipment ... $250 *** doesn't include lawnmower, gas, trimmers, and other big ticket items****

.... ... $12,450 for 100 jars of pickles/fruit.

The feeling of pride and accomplishment.........priceless.

Yep, roughly a buck a jar and for that you can put up enough to last through to next summer. Most people don't grow everything they intend to can. Ever hear of fruit stands or pick-your-own farms? Lots of people will spend the money to grab 10 lbs., 20 lbs. or however much of what they want and process at home. Still works out cheaper than buying from the store and BONUS - you get to season/salt/sweeten to taste.

The smaller mason jars also come in handy for storing spices.
