I saw it in the paper, which is now in the recycling, then I couldn't find details, then I googled and here: http://www.kelowna.com/2010/01/21/letni ... ity-event/

I know Norm and this is not a publicity stunt. It actually started out with a personal invite to some friends and kind of snowballed. It actually was planned to be at his house but he got inundated with 'can I bring a friend' emails.
I am not sure that Norm is that keen on stunts. He goes to a remarkable number of community events and I am sure knows the benefit to his career by being there. I also think that he actually wants to be there. So, whether it is good for hm or not I think it is also good for the community to have someone actively involved and not just at election time.
I am as cynical about politicians as the next guy but I feel the urge to refrain from knocking Norm. Nice guy and there are sooo many others out there to take aim at before him.

WATCH THE MEN’S GOLD HOCKEY GAME AND RAISE MONEY FOR THE 2011 INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S WINTER GAMES
KELOWNA - Residents are invited to watch the Men’s Gold Medal Hockey game while helping raise funds for the 2011 International Children’s Winter Games.
“The gold medal men’s hockey game is the final event of the 2010 Winter Olympics and we want to show our support by bringing people in our community together,” says Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick. “It’s also a great time to build excitement and raise funds for the 2011 International Children’s Winter Games hosted by Kelowna and Big White.”
Game time is at 12:15 p.m. at Rutland Centennial Hall on February 28 and is expected to end at about 3:30 p.m., but everyone is invited to stay, or come back and watch the 2010 Olympics Closing Ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. Bring both your Olympic and Canadian spirit, and dress in red to watch the men’s gold medal hockey game live on the big screen. Admission is free and Rotary volunteers will be hosting a silent auction, 50/50 fundraiser as well as a concession to raise funds for the 2011 International Children’s Winter Games.
Seating for the gold medal game is limited, so please preregister by calling 250-765-8516.
Kelowna and Big White will host the 2011 International Children’s Winter Games on January 25-31, 2011. The event will attract about 1,000 athletes aged 12 to 15 in sports including skiing, skating, curling, hockey and speed skating. This will be the first time the Games will be held outside of Europe and the first time they include hockey and speed skating.

I agree with jaymz - it's actually quite amazing to see a politician reaching out to his community outside of election time.
All politics aside though, I think it will be great to be able to bring the kids out for a community event and share in the excitement with friends and family.

Out of his own pockets is out of his own pockets. Give the guy a break. He's trying to do something good.

Yeah, okay. Let's all go celebrate the government(s) putting us into massive debt for a freaking party.

Then stay home, why do the few have to ruin it for those of us who enjoy the Olympics?

I think this is awesome. Cool free event. Good on Letnick for organizing it.
