ok - and if the services don't get dropped and taxes don't go up - you'll apologize right?

and if the medical care does not get cut....oops...too late.
and if various other gov't services do not get cut.....oops...too late.

prove there is any relation and that any cuts weren't already going to happen anyway - you can't

Let's sell off BC Hydro to pay this "debt" that you are all concerned about - and kill two birds with one stone - a massive cash infusion into the province to cover this "cost" and also privatize and unload a massive union bureaucracy at the same time that could be run so much better as a private corporation because you could get rid of the tons of union deadwood currently rotting inside that crown corp - done and done - where do we vote on this?

The topic is a serious one and doesn't warrant your childish games.

There IS going to be a deficit and we WILL have to pay for it somehow.

So, how are you prepared personally to pay for it (plus the amount you racked up on your credit card to enjoy your own personal part of the party?) ???

I agree - Cateyes - this topic doesn't warrant your childish games.

I already floated my solution, IF there is a deficit - sell BC Hydro - done and done.

Then for sure something is going to have to give somewhere.

What it would have been if the party hadn't happened is anyone's guess.

On another note, I read somewhere this morning that Visa had reported something like $100 Million in credit card charges passed through their system over the Olympic period, and I assume that other credit cards will report similar numbers - so card holders now have their own debt to pay too. Considering the "investment" in the games and related infrastructure whether 6 billion or 10 billion or even more, the lower mainland economy "enjoyed" a rather paltry "spinoff" to this point I would think.

...and one wonders if even that may be offset to some considerable degree as individuals "cut back" their expenditures until they have paid their credit card bills resulting from overspending during the period.

Nab

who the hell cares about the individuals cutting back on spending - you do know that a large majority of the people in Vancouver for the Olympics were from outside BC and outside of Canada right? All we care about is that they spent their money here - and they did - all reports I have heard is that sales of everything - clothing, food, beer, everything - far far surpassed all the most positive estimates. The big mistake here is trying to measure the benefits only in the two week period - as another poster said - these Games are going to pay dividends for years to come just like they did in Calgary. Anyone who says otherwise is just a plain liar, with an agenda.

Of course I realize those things L & T, and I think your "liar with an agenda" is out of line for this thread. The Party's Over, get used to that fact. And please don't keep trying to peddle the idea that it is "fact" and cast in stone that BC will see any long term financial benefits from these games that would not have come our way anyway, because that would be a lie too since you nor anyone knows that will be.

I'm rather surprised though that you wouldn't care about individuals cutting back on spending in BC, for our deficit at the end of the year relies heavily on people investing and spending based on potential further declines in government revenue (separate from costs). Besides, all international eyes are on Sochi now, and it remains to be seen just how much funny images of beavers, moose, and red serge will attract tourism and investment going forward. ;-)

Interesting comments about the Olymics here. I'm not saying that everything printed here is necessary correct, and a lot of people will say that it's nothing but anti-Olympic propaganda, but it does make for interesting reading nonetheless.

ha - I knew that the thought of cutting union deadwood and introducing accountability to our crown corps would cause all the socialists to go nuts. That's why I was only half serious about selling BC Hydro as I know some of you are so crazy about government owning things that you'd probably jump off the WAC Bennett dam if it ever happened that private enterprise was allowed to clean up that white elephant. I hate government owning things - all that happens is massive waste as bloated unions take over - but this is getting wayyy off topic.

Look you guys - 99% of the popluation is laughing at you negative nay-saying goobers right now. Give all this crap a rest for a few days and let everyone enjoy this - you all just look so silly. No one is going to know the long term benefits of the games for awhile yet - all i have is precedent on my side to back up my claims of long term benefits from Winter Olympics, and you have....well...it appears giant chips on your shoulders and not much else. So flame me all you want - but trust me - everyone is laughing at you guys, not me, right now.

But it's so much more fun than being a pessimistic cynical person who never wants to do anything but experience stagnation and fear of trying something new. If you are always scared of failure you'll never experience anything new and that's a fate I wish on no one.

BTW - guess what - the Canadian economy appears to be rebounding - something no one is factoring in here either:

What burns me is that all of BC will have to pay for Vancouver infrastructure that the rest of us will never or rarely use. I remember when they started this fiasco they budgeted it only for the Vancouver tax base. In fact that was their big selling point to us taxpayers.

Of course that was all before the BC Gov't had to step in when the Athletes village and Convention centre and security (like that was a surprise) turned into fiscal nightmares.

I have no problem with Canada Line though. That is a good thing and will be worth it in the long run. Sea to sky.....meh.....a great new highway to a US owned ski resort paid for by Canadian tax dollars....fill in the blanks.

I would like to see a breakdown of how current convention bookings and future projections are going to pay off that 800million dollar convention centre. I don't see how those numbers could possibly add up.

I see your points here Cateyes - ok - but is anyone in Vancouver mad about our new bridge that they will never use? Or the new hospital expansions in Vernon and Kelowna? :129: Just asking.

the facts are gordo mis handled our budget from day one. its him who sunk our province, not the games.

the dooomsday ppl said exact same thing about expo 86 and i know from living in vancouver at that time , that it produced way more money being invested in bc than wht expo cost.

and ill repeat again the choice was games or no games, not games or heathcare or games or more jobs, what you nay sayers seem to be forgetting is it was canadas games not bc games, its been paid for , infact i would even say that we will come out ahead. and yes you can say it will create more tourism. more investment ,it did create lotsa jobs building the sites , and prolly helped them companies out to keep ppl hired.

i hoe we bid for the summer games lol vancouver would be perfect for the summer games :spinball:
