Advance Polls

Post by oneh2obabe »

will be held on April 22, 23 and 25 between the hours of 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. The address of yours will be shown on the voter registration card you received in the mail. Don't forget to take the registration card and identification - makes the voting process quick and painless.

Ask your neighbour or someone living close to you what addresses are shown on their card. Then you can go to the polling station, get registered with proper ID and vote. Or you can use your address or postal code to find your district on the link below. District offices are open tonight until 8pm so you can phone.

So did my gf and I. We're both working on election day so it made sense to do it today so she has the rest of the weekend free.

Was your polling station busy? They had 4 tables setup at mine and 1 had a lineup out the door while the other 3 were twiddling their thumbs.

It was somewhat busy, but there wasn't a line-up out the door. Mind you, I voted during the dinner hour, so that might be why. :sunshine: My guy prefers to vote on election day (and since he won't be working the polls with me, he can do that!).

Its against my principal to have advance voting on Good Friday. Bad move electrions Canada. The Saturday and the Monday be fine.

You do realize that for many people Friday was just another day, right?

Elections Canada doesn't decide when the election will be held. You can place the blame for that squarely on Harper's shoulders. He could have asked the GG to hold the election on May 9th, so that advanced voting wouldn't fall on the long weekend. :127:

or place the blame on the Libs and New Dumms for causing this election in the first place. Take your pick.

Don't higher-voter turnouts mean bad news for most incumbents? :127:

Election Canada isn't to blame for the advance poll dates - they have to follow the Canada Elections Acts which clearly states the advance. If you want to lay the blame, try Harper. The PM decides when he/she wants an election and then instructs the Governor General to "dissolve" parliament and calls an election.

News Releases and Media Advisories
Advance Polling Dates

OTTAWA, April 19, 2011 — While concerns have been expressed that advance polls for the 41st general election coincide with statutory holidays and several days of religious observance for the Christian and Jewish communities, the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada does not determine the dates for advance polls, as these flow from legislative requirements.

The Canada Elections Act provides that advance polls will occur on the 10th, 9th and 7th days before election day. Subsection 171(2) of the Act is clear that these can be the only dates for advance polls. As the election has been called for Monday, May 2, advance polls must be held on Friday, April 22, Saturday, April 23 and Monday, April 25.

The Canada Elections Act provides a range of mechanisms for electors to cast their ballots. Electors who are unable to vote at the advance polls can vote either on polling day, Monday, May 2, or at any time during the election, by taking advantage of the special ballot. To vote by special ballot, electors can submit an application either to their local Elections Canada office or to Elections Canada in Ottawa no later than 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26. They must ensure that their ballot is returned to the local Elections Canada office before the close of the polls on May 2, or to Elections Canada in Ottawa before 6:00 p.m. on May 2.

"We recognize that many electors will find the advance polling dates inappropriate or inconvenient and we fully understand their concerns," said Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Marc Mayrand. "It is important that electors choose the voting option that best suits their individual circumstances."

So what? Don't do your voting on Good Friday then. Cripes, these Christians think they run the country and should be able to dictate how the rest of us (and governments) function!

As well, I'm not entirely sure that Harper has much control over the timing of the election date or the length of the campaign that preceeds it (Doesn't the GG have something to do with that based on the date Parliament was disolved?). But if anything (or anyone) is to be blamed for the dates that are set by law for advance polls as described above, it is the fact that we are having a totally uneccessary election in the first place. And it certainly wasn't Harper who forced that on us.
