Re: Jack Layton...Professional snake oil salesman…

I was watching Layton pumping up the troops in Kamloops on CPAC, and one of his comments involved him "promising" to not claw back the 1.6 billion dollar bribe if BC voters shot down the HST in the referendum.

Be that as it may, his spin was to try to blame Harper for foisting the HST on BC.

Well, lets try this spin instead... Harper didn't foist the HST on BC.

Instead, what really happened was that the Federal Government and the Government of the Province of ONTARIO (JackOLayton's home turf) were in negotiations regarding implementing the HST there, and had agreed to enter into a contract that would do so, and it involved a "kick back" to sweeten the pot with federal money to assist in covering the costs of the change, plus help Ontario out of their financial difficulties that had resulted from the hyper-overspending Liberal Government they had there (much like the one we have here in BC - after all, ours is influenced by many of the same people that influenced the Ontario Liberals, as well as influenced the Federal Liberals platform under Paul Martin). Where was Jack when Ontario needed him to fight on their behalf in Ottawa against the HST? Oh, I forgot, he wanted Ontario to have it didn't he.... He just loves opportunities to increase taxes, particularly if he can brag it helps his Toronto stomping ground constituencies.

Well, the BC bureaucracy (and as a result BC's finance Minister Hansen and our Premier at the time Gordon Campbell, who had got BC into similar financial trouble to Ontario's, and were on the verge of fighting an election here based on a financial record that was not that rosy either, plus were scrambling to finance an Owelympics to boot) ....got wind of that deal between the Federal Government and Ontario's Liberal Government, and approached the Federal Government to see if they could cut a similar deal with them.

Nothing to do with Harper foisting the HST on BC. The BC Liberals under Gordon Campbell foisted the HST on BC and asked if they could get a similar kick back in federal funds to do it! But Layton's snake oil spin on it would have you believe it was all Harpers fault, and suggests it would also be his fault if BC broke the deal that our provincial government cooked up and resulted in the federal money having to be paid back. More "JackOLaytonLogic", and he seems to actually believe BC voters are stupid enough to fall for it, and elect federal NDP candidates simply because of our sensitivity to the HST issue, ....a Provincial matter, not a federal matter. And certainly nothing to do with Harper other than his government gave BC what it wanted when it asked for it..... even allowed them to bastardize the HST here so that it bore little resemblance to the original HST and general taxation concepts that other HST provinces use so we didn't have to give up our beloved Carbon Tax the tax and spend BC Liberals foisted on us on top of it.

Why would you ask NAB for advice? His post from Mar 24 says it all....lol :dyinglaughing:

"Anyway, I have to say I don't think I am going to get too excited about this election, not even going to follow it very closely. It's just going to be mostly more Liberal angst and mud slinging, and I am just totally tired of listening to their crap. What the NDP do and say is not likely to be momentous in any way, and the Greens are not going to run a campaign".

I don’t see this as much of an issue. It would be one thing if Layton had been out calling down “Massage” parlours or if he was ringing his visits to them through on his six figure expense account thus billing taxpayers, but as neither appears to be the case here I see this as a non issue. It is kind of funny though that once again Layton claims he was “unaware” there was some other stuff going on there. Much like he was unaware he had gone to a Private Clinic and was also apparently unaware that his campaign platform was pure fiscal fantasy….

ya. I actually felt that way, and the Liberals and the Greens didn't disappoint. But what many of us thought at the outset was just going to be another repeat of the last repeats, very quickly turned into something different and promising as to perhaps getting a Conservative Majority after all. I didn't really expect the Liberals to make such fools of themselves, but there ya go.

As for your question Norma, I would not be so presumptuous as to answer it directly, although obviously I am a Conservative supporter in this election and hope as many people as possible feel likewise (in the best interests of Canada, not party loyalty).

But how you vote depends on what you personally value, but more importantly what the situation is in your riding. In ridings that are foregone conclusions (like my own) how we vote as individuals (or even if we vote at all sometimes) is unlikely to produce any significant change. The same individual will be sent to Ottawa regardless.

It is ridings in places that we in BC have little say in, mainly the populous provinces of Ontario and Quebec, that will decide if it is to be a Conservative minority or a majority. Yes, some seats may change in the west and in the maritimes, but I seriously doubt much that will alter the overall outcome as to majority or minority. So if your riding looks like it may be a close race, the only advice I can offer is you either vote for the closest contender if you want change, or vote for the incumbent if you don't, ..then cross your fingers that sufficient people in that riding feel the same to make it happen. It is easier for me to advise who not to vote for, and that is any candidate who doesn't have a hope in hell of winning the seat, or making any difference warming a back bench in Ottawa and wasting space and air even if he/she did win a seat.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Edit to add: If I want to get an inkling of what is likely to happen in Ontario, both in this federal election and in their upcoming provincial one, I just listen to my cousin there. He hasn't been wrong in over 50 years! :sunshine:

Al - you know that Jack found a way to expense this "massage" to the taxpayers, I would bet tons of money on it. As for the people crying "desperation" - I would also bet tons of money that if it had been Harper caught with his pants down (literally) all of you anti-Harper trolls would be having fits of ecstacy right now. As it stands, you are just mad that it was the NDP leader who was caught in the middle of "E-Jackulayton" with a prostitute. :dyinglaughing:

Nabs - here's the NDP's new campaign theme song:

Sorry Barbi. If there is something there regarding some theme song - I don't see it because of my security settings. You will have to provide a link to it. I don't see third party things like videos embedded in posts.

T.O. councillor skeptical of Layton story

TORONTO – The Velvet Touch Massage parlour — where NDP Leader Jack Layton was found during a 1996 police visit — was suspected to be a bawdy house since it opened, Toronto Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti alleged.

The massage parlour in the city's Chinatown neighbourhood, which ceased operations down shortly after the police came calling, opened in 1994 and was among 26 suspected bawdy houses Toronto Police cracked down on with more than 300 charges.

Layton has denied any wrongdoing and said he did not know it was a suspected bawdy house.

Despite the Velvet Touch being a "pretty active illicit" operation, no one at Toronto City Hall received any complaints about it, Mammoliti said.

"I've asked recently if anyone at City Hall had complained in 1996 and there were no complaints that came out of councillors, but police had their eye on it, and at the end of the day, shut it down," Mammoliti said.

"I can pretty much guarantee wherever there's a rub-and-tug, it's run by organized crime, and drugs are always a part of the equation. That's just a reality of the business."

As for his thoughts on Layton being caught in the room with an attractive 5-foot-10 Asian woman, he said he doesn't buy that the NDP leader didn't know it was a place where he could get sexual services.

"He's claiming he got a legitimate massage, but the issue here is it's clear it was a rub-and-tug and most people in society would know that when they go in. I'd be very surprised that a very smart politician would not have known ... and Jack was very smart."

At the time, police were targeting massage parlours using underage girls from Thailand.

Layton was in "The Velvet Touch" massage parlour and he's claiming he didn't know it was an illegal operation? I knew that lying came easy to Jacko but this is ridiculous.

Ya know, I really don't give a crap about what Layton (or anyone else) does on his own time. Provided he didn't pay for any such personal "services" with taxpayer dollars and it didn't involve anything illegal, such as getting involved with underage children or immigrants being taken advantage of by crime syndicates.

Also, we shouldn't forget, ..professionals like Harper tend to live and breath their job 24/7/365, while those more socialist inclined tend to be clock punchers and have much more personal time to play and enjoy and goof off.
