Excerpts from: http://www.vancouversun.com/news/decisi ... story.html
OTTAWA — A Liberal MP was left holding the bag after a former staff member racked up thousands of dollars worth of bills for booze and travel on his office expense accounts, iPolitics has learned.
Ontario MP Glen Pearson acknowledged the matter, telling iPolitics he chose to reimburse the House of Commons out of his own pocket rather than take the former staff member to court because he didn't want the affair to become public and embarrass Parliament.
The matter came to light after an analysis by iPolitics of MPs spending in 2009-10 discovered a discrepancy with Pearson's hospitality expenses.
When the data was ranked according to hospitality expenses, Pearson's office stood out — not only because it topped the list, but because the $11,307.24 spent on hospitality exceeded the limit of $10,734 outlined by the House of Commons.
Pearson said he became aware of the problem when he was contacted by the House of Commons' internal liquor store in 2009 about an unpaid $4,500 bill for alcohol charged to his office budget. Pearson, who doesn't drink alcohol, thought at first there had been a mistake. However, he soon learned that the alcohol had been purchased on his office account by a staff member who no longer worked for him.
Pearson said he had been under the impression the employee had agreed to reimburse the House of Commons for the $4,500 worth of alcohol but now questions whether he did since the amount appeared in the public report of Pearson's office spending. Rather than take the staff member to court or just let the remainder be covered by the House of Commons under his budget allocation, Pearson says he decided to reimburse "more than $20,000" to the House of Commons out of his own pocket.

I don’t see this as much of an issue. It would be one thing if Layton had been out calling down “Massage” parlours or if he was ringing his visits to them through on his six figure expense account thus billing taxpayers, but as neither appears to be the case here I see this as a non issue. It is kind of funny though that once again Layton claims he was “unaware” there was some other stuff going on there. Much like he was unaware he had gone to a Private Clinic and was also apparently unaware that his campaign platform was pure fiscal fantasy….
Of course it was SUN NEWS that released that smear and we all know who's behind SUN NEWS.....not the LIBS. It's a desperate attempt by Harper because remember nobody wanted this election.....ya right.
Harper Monday night.
Only it is NOT a smear because in this case the story has been proven to be true. Layton has even admitted it was true. His MP wife also prepared a media statement about it. What is more interesting is why did the CBC NEVER run this story? Were they being “selective” in what they choose to report? I can guarantee had this been Harper at a “lurk and jerk” massage parlor it would have been a MAJOR CBC news story.
As I said before, I don’t personally think this issue will have squat of an impact on Layton. Clearly he made some enemies on the Toronto police force while he was a city councilor and clearly some thought this would be a good time for a payback. To me the bigger issue is the lack of professionalism of the police; however we all know Canadian law enforcement in general is not above partisan interference in a political campaign if it can work against soft on crime left and center left politicians. Just ask the Federal Liberals that question; they were victimized by it not so long ago….

Really? its true Layton was there and he has admitted but what else in the story is true? The public has been given a coup of snippets from a police report (a report that apparantly warranted NO CHARGES to anyone involved.....) Perhaps some active imaginations are making their own conclusions to suit their personal slant?????
And sun media..... nice reporting of ????/ what exactly is this? 15 year old unsubstantiated rumour by a bitter cop to a conservative paper - such depth!
