Kelowna Councillor Michele Rule

Kelowna City Councillor, Michele Rule, has unveiled her re-election platform.

Rule, first elected in 2005, is seeking a third term on council.

She calls it an 'honour to serve the people of Kelowna' on council for the past six years adding her listening skills, communicating and consensus building have been vital to her success as a councillor.

"Using a balanced decision-making process of consultation, research and vision provides the best outcomes for all of Kelowna's citizens," says Rule.

Over her six years on council, Rule says she is proud of a number of accomplishments including:

the opening of the H2O Centre
the expanded Rutland Family Y
the creation of many new parks
the expansion of bicycle/pedestrian networks
upgrades to water and sewer treatment plants
partnerships with the BC and Federal Governments to create supportive housing
an updated Official Community Plan and Downtown Plan

If re-elected, Rule says she plans to focus her efforts on several initiatives, including:

Economic:

Renew Downtown Kelowna through the Bernard Street Revitalization Project and the revised Downtown Plan
Continue to support the work of the Economic Development Office with funding at the regional level
Create an International Friendship Policy to help businesses with projects out-of-country
Listen and respond to the voice of small business in Kelowna through roundtable and other processes
Simplify the development process as much as possible

Environmental:

Develop more parks in Kelowna including a Glenmore Recreation Park
Further improve transportation with an east-west connection with UCBO
Provide safer, connected bicycle routes
Offer better transit service throughout the community, including a transit hub for Rutland
Follow through with wetland and foreshore protection as laid out in the City's policies

Social and Cultural:

Continue to work with the federal and provincial governments to provide attainable housing
Move forward with initiatives suggested in the Affordable Housing Strategy for Kelowna
Provide opportunities for all citizens to have a voice in municipal affairs if they so choose
Work with local arts groups and other stakeholders to implement a Cultural Strategy for Kelowna
I see a LOT of money being spent and no mention of where that money will come from. I think it's time to rein in some of the social spending and feel-good stuff - and focus instead on balanced books and reining in the city's debt.
