Either way "hooterville sounds better than, "RUT"land.Queen K wrote:George+ wrote:I have lived in the Kelowna area for 50 years.

I have NEVER heard of Rutland being called Hooterville?
Ask the historians. IF Walter meant a "shanty town" instead of a gender reference, it is even WORSE!
Both are tasteless and lack class.
That's what I was thinking, either way. Two thumbs down.

Wally was obviously trying to make Sharon look bad with his story and ended up with egg on his face. I LOVED Sharon's final words - that she told him not to bring up the story. She obviously had the zinger waiting for him.
Totally noticed that too! He was trying so hard to make her look stupid. Guess if thats all he's got going for him so be it.

Walter meant no offense, it was a light hearted comment and my friends in Rutland laughed it off. Walter supports Rutland very much. Its better than Sharon being called out as being in a "conflict of interest situation with the fire union." She signs off on the budget to the fire men, increased their Salaries and now gets money from the Union which is paid for by the City. Big ooopsie doopsie! That will be the end of Sheperd Saturday. Its been a good run and she is a nice lady, but Walter has much bigger concerns than a joke taken out of context. We have serious issues downtown with crime, we have homeless people on the streets. Walter is a much more effective leader and can get the job done.

I agree; but George, If you're 50yrs old or more you should know the term "Hooterville" way pre-dates the term "Hooters".
Maybe I can jog your memory . . . "Petticoat Junction".
Anyway that's what Wally was referring to I'm sure, and as humorous as it may be to some, it was always considered a condescending label for Rutland.

Maybe the residents of Rutland should get more upset the way the current council has dragged their feet on the Rutland Transit Hub?
The Feds and Provincial Government have allocated funds for this, so ask your current council why Pandosy/Lakeshore and Gordon drive get all the upgrades? I know the funds for Pandosy/Lakeshore and Gordon were from a different program but why does Rutland not get the same priority when the funds are already allocated?
Maybe ask which way some of the current council drive home at night?
Why is it that URBA has to raise funds to cover the Utility box's but city decides to buy them for the rest of Kelowna?
There is talk about getting control of a portion of Harvey avenue to assist with getting the downtown upgraded, what about Highway 33? How much was spent on bike paths to make it safer, have you ever tried to ride a bike down Highway 33? Should this not be a priority for our city. Go Green ride a bike....
Yes lets get offended about Walter calling Rutland Hooterville, but no one take offense about how Rutland has been treated by this current council.

Rutland has always gotten the short end of the stick, whether it was Walter or Sharon, this council or previous council.

I'm not too hyped about the shoddy attitude any councillor in this council or past councils have had towards the community of Rutland. My consolation is that by leaving it alone it hasn't become spoiled like some other areas of Kelowna have. We are still a great community of families here. We look out for each other and we hold wonderful community family events out here - most of them free.
I am not too anxious to have the city's planning department messing with our little paradise out here and turning it into another arts and culture centre like I know is in the works, complete with artsy expensive boutiques, ladeedah theatah and other exclusive "amenities" and totally out of character from our agricultural roots.
I don't know if you were part of all that fancy planning, Todd ATS, but I don't really care. It isn't what we need here. It isn't who we are.
Yes, there were certain things they should have done. They could have maintained the boulevard along Hollywood better and planted some decent drought-resistant grass. They could have cleaned up the downtown areas better and they could have planned some of the road networks better. They could have spent a bit more money out here but then the trade-off would have been too much power trip, empire building interference and grandiose ideas for Rutland.

Gramma, I don't really understand your comments, and I agree completely with ATS' comments. This Council was not even going to allocate any budget to the transit hub this year if I had not written letters to the editor and to them. The transit funding for the area has been in place since about 2007 and Council still did not want to do anything! In fact we are getting a drastically scaled back version of what was planned. In addition, and further supporting why we need change (council and mayor), our current Mayor was fully against the Highway 33 - Black Mountain road upgrades. If you have a chance, just ask Al Horning and Colin Day about how hard they had to lobby Sharon to spend some money on this project. I would bet that she only agreed to the City funding of that project after she realized that people from the Mission would largely benefit from the safer drive to Big White.

Todd,
Sorry to hijack the thread a little, but as I was making my final list of who I was going to vote for councel last night, I was looking for your name.
Were you not going to run this year ?

Sharon has a bias towards mission......
and I think Gramma should run for mayor or council..... or are you already there? Hmm.

And Mr Gray has a bias towards everyone who doesn't think like him . . . that's why Kelowna re-elects Shepherd.

I hate reading these posts from mis-informed people. You actually make yourself look stupid.

The Fireman's Union then gave the $500.00 to the retired fireman. That was their choice.... Sharon certainlly had nothing to do with that. My company donated money to a candidate as well, is that wrong doing? Where else would these people get the money to go forward with their platforms. I'm in business and deal with the city all the time to get permits. I'm certainly not going to be given a pass at city hall for my $100.00 donation to a candidate.
