Regardless of where the money is coming from ... it was a bad move on the fire dept. If the current mayor acepted the money as the cameras were rolling and put on the spot ... she did the appropriate response ... but I truly believe that she should return the money to the presenters and say "thanks but no thanks" ... if this does not occurr I will be voting for another mayoral candidate ....

When W.G. goes back to his backers and says the same, they'll all be on common ground. Oh, and what is to say W.G.'s backers don't expect something in return if he gets in? Such as rubber stamping of highrises?
As WW3 develops, no one is going to be dissing the "preppers." What have you done?

There is no way I am going to be swayed by recent posters who joined the forum only to malign Sharon Sheperd while ignoring Walter Gray and his financial backers! Comments that indicate that this is the last straw and that the poster will definitely not be supporting her now, are transparent and laughable. :coffeecanuck:

There appears to be a conspiracy behind this flurry of posts.... :dyinglaughing: I will not be deterred from supporting the best candidate for mayor...Sharon Sheperd.

From the Kelowna Captital News . . .

Gray expressed “shock” at the news Shepherd had accepted the donation but his opponent defended the contribution saying the firefighters are supporting her because, as both a councillor and mayor, she has supported them in the past.

What is typical and very evident this whole election campaign is that Gray camp has no platform, plans or ideas. They are running a smear campaign and seeking, grabbing, jumping on, and manipulating every word from Shepherd’s lips. In or out of context. They don’t debate the merits of ideas, they just bark out and pound the pulpit stating “we need change”. Never once offering ideas or solutions, just propaganda and drama. The guy is a real pro.

Cpt. Larry Hollier, president of the Kelowna Professional Firefighters local 913, confirmed the donation saying his group supports candidates based on what they have done in the past, not what they will do in the future. He said Shepherd went to bat for firefighters over the issue of coverage for firefighters exposed to potential cancer-causing chemicals when they are fighting fires when she was a councillor. “We support those who support us,” he said, adding the union is also supporting incumbents Charlie Hodge and Michele Rule for their past actions regarding firefighter safety and challengers Mohini Singh and Maxine DeHart for their help with firefighter-supported charities.

It is a fact that during the ’05 campaign Shepherd refused the cheque from the FD. In ’08 Shepherd refused the cheque again, despite the pleading of FD members to support her campaign. Now this time, they are again at her door saying we want to help, and again she said no. It was at that point a retired member said fine, wrote a cheque in his name, insisting the campaign team accept it, and it was. There has also been allegations this is tax payer money . . . it is not. It is the FD members’ money and they can use it as they see fit.

But Gray said he is concerned about the donation to Shepherd’s campaign because the firefighters will have to negotiate a contract with the city in a few years and that will have to be approved by council. The last firefighter contract was signed in June.

Really. As I understand the process, it’s an arbitration process and the mayor is only one voice of many, so nice try Wally.

Finally . . . . so what? Are the KFD members not Kelowna citizens? And as such are they not allowed to show support no different than FourChange.org for example, or any other citizen group (i.e. Mission Residents Association) out there trying to support those who support them. Do the FF’s of Kelowna not deserve the right to make their feelings known??? They are citizens too.

I was so happy to hear on the radio that voter turnout yesterday was 50% greater than 2008. Way to go!! The more people that vote the more chance the right candidates get elected...

I cant believe this dog and pony show. I dont know of any candidate that does not need financial contributitions to run a campaign. Look at the size of Walters campaign! Do you really think its all his own personal money? Think again! I asked a neighbour last night who is a fire fighter and his exact words were we have always supported her since 2005 when Sharon, Ron Cannan and Al Horning moved a motion to send a letter to WCB for cancer coverage for Firefighters. Apparently Wally wouldnt do this for them. And now for adopting a plan for a firehall in glenmore because they dont have enough resource there or the rest of the city. Seems simple enough to me why they support her and after spending 45 minutes outside shovelling and hearing his side, I am voting Sharon as I do care about my family's safety throughout Kelowna.

Currently in question is a $500 contribution to the Mayors campaign, something I would guess all candidates are receiving in one form or another from their supporters. Yes, we the Kelowna Professional Fire Fighters gave the Mayor $500 which was returned with a thank you. At this point, a retired member of our association donated $500 of his own money towards the campaign in which we in return refunded his efforts.

To me there is a larger issue at stake, Public Safety, and those who support it.

Sincerely,

Larry Hollier, President L953, Kelowna Professional Fire Fighters

To whom it may concern;

I am writing on behalf of the Kelowna Professional Fire Fighters Association in regards to the recent discussion surrounding political contributions to Mayor Sharon Shepherds campaign. Yes, it is true our association supports Mayor Shepherd 100% and has for many years not only as a Mayor but as well a councillor. The issues are clear and simple to our association and should be to you as well. The issue is two fold but extends beyond. On March 9,2005 a notice of motion was brought forward by the then Councillor Ron Cannan for consideration at the regular meeting of March 14, 2005. At this time, The City of Kelowna was the largest City in the Province of BC that had not written WCB a letter supporting cancer presumption for fire fighters based on the best medical evidence. At the regular meeting, our voice was heard by Council and supported whole heartedly and lead by Councillor Cannan, Horning and Shepherd.

Today Fire fighters are covered for 10 cancers as occupational diseases after legislation at the Provincial level. Since that time we have supported Ron Cannan Federally, Al Horning Provincially, and Mayor Shepherd Municipally. Today we also acknowledge and support MLA Norm Letnick as he is currently working on all emergency workers health and safety with the Disclosure Act. So is this wrong to support politicians for supporting our health and well being????

Secondly, Mayor Shepherd along with other councillors have adopted the Kelowna Fire Department Strategic Plan. In short this was a study prepared by an outside agency hired by the City to look at the current operations including fire suppression capabilities and response times. In this City funded study, it was identified that response times in North Glenmore were not meeting the bar and the ability to continue more than one suppression activity at a time was not possible with current standards. The report suggested a new Firehall be built and staffed 24/7 by the year 2016. Yes we support Mayor Shepherd for her support on this issue. Having said that, the issue is not wages or benefits, strictly the staffing to do our job better, safer and allow for a better outcome for the citizens and taxpayers of Kelowna, despite where you live. So again I ask, is it wrong for an association to support those that support safer response times and staffing?

Currently in question is a $500 contribution to the Mayors campaign, something I would guess all candidates are receiving in one form or another from their supporters. Yes, we the Kelowna Professional Fire Fighters gave the Mayor $500 which was returned with a thank you. At this point, a retired member of our association donated $500 of his own money towards the campaign in which we in return refunded his efforts.

To me there is a larger issue at stake, Public Safety, and those who support it.

Sincerely,

Larry Hollier, President L953, Kelowna Professional Fire Fighters

She didn't give them a raise any more than Andre Blanleil did. Council has negotiators to negotiate employee contracts. I understand that ex-chief Zimmermann received $500 as well, and yet over the years he was chief he had little use for the union or the people in it. Where's Walter's funding come from for his high cost ad campaign? If Sharon owes someone because they contributed money, who does Walter owe favors to?

I will say it again..

If the cheque was from a retired citiizen.. why did she not say that when she was live on the radio.

Sharon said YES to the question "did you receive a campaign donation from the Fire Department". That was her response....

Now all of a sudden she returned the cheque and a retired fireman gave her the money.. WHY.. because she was called out on the issue and is now doing damage control.
