Energy deal

Post by maryjane48 »

Canada's premiers and territorial leaders have reached a deal on a Canadian energy strategy which they say supports common energy interests and addresses climate change after two days of intense and at times tense discussions in St. John's, N.L.

Paul Davis, the premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, said during a closing news conference on Friday that the deal ushers in "a new era of energy partnerships in Canada." He said the deal came after "a frank exchange of views and healthy discussions."

The Canadian Energy Strategy is, the premiers said in a joint news release, "a demonstration of their commitment to strengthening the economy, creating jobs, ensuring a secure supply of energy for all Canadians, supporting energy innovation and addressing climate change."

Meanwhile Brad Wall destroys the neophyte Notley for bowing and scraping to Quebec to get the Energy East deal done. Good job Brad, the defacto premier of Alberta now!

Alberta premier Notley and Saskatchewan premier Wall scrap over pipelines

When someone has to start explaining themselves you know it is not a good thing.

But our Premier Notley is knee-deep in explanations this day.

Why?

Because earlier in the week, Notley gabs with the Quebec premier.

Afterwards, Notley explains how Quebec’s premier Philippe Couillard told her if Alberta moves forward on climate change and environmental protection “in a meaningful and convincing way” there would be “more likelihood” his province would accept the Energy East pipeline from Alberta to New Brunswick.

Notley sounds like she’s cool with what he said.

The Quebec premier is later convinced “we have found a new ally in Ms. Notley.”

Meanwhile, Brad Wall, the Saskatchewan premier, can’t believe an Alberta premier, yes, an Alberta premier, would have that attitude.

We’ll scratch your back, Quebec and you might scratch ours.

MORE: Alberta Premier Notley says Saskatchewan's Preem Wall is just 'showboating'

Wall is fit to be tied and serves up more red meat for the folks back home in oil country than you’d see at a cattle sale.

Wall says maybe equalization payments have to start flowing through a pipeline to get one approved through central Canada.

What about that $10 billion in equalization? What about the massive jobs created by the oilpatch for all Canadians?

Wall says there is growing frustration in the west and it is time to start speaking plain to the rest of the country.

While committing to do better for the environment, Wall says the oilpatch is a big part of a strong economy and bankrolling programs where Quebec gets a big bang of the buck.

“Oil and gas is a good thing. Let’s be proud of it,” says Wall, who figures some are ashamed of the oilpatch.

“Can you imagine Saudi Arabia releasing an energy strategy for the country and listing wind power ahead of their oil assets?”

Ah ... no.

After Wall fires across the bow, Notley is obviously on the defensive at the huddle of the nation’s premiers in Newfoundland.

For many Albertans, the words of the Saskatchewan premier should be coming out of the mouth of our premier.

But that’s not happening.

Oh, Notley says she is standing up for the interests of Alberta and just wants to see a balance of the economy and the environment.

But she goes after Wall. He’s obviously struck a nerve.

“Other premiers can do a little bit of showboating if that’s what they want to do,” says Notley.

Wall shoots back.

“If standing up for the industry that is so important is showboating in any way, show me the bridge.”

Another round goes to Wall.

Notley does not mind. She is going in a different direction. She is playing a different game.

Notley says she wants “intelligent, thoughtful, mature dialogue.”

“You don’t get things by picking fights with people gratuitously,” says the premier.

“You do get things done by having good conversations so because I’m doing that does not, by any means, mean I’m handing off anybody’s responsibility or authority and to suggest so is simply ridiculous and a bit naive.”

Let us allow the premier to continue. Her sentences seem to be getting longer.

“I’m engaging in a constructive, responsive, collaborative discussion with my colleagues across the country which acknowledges the political realities, and frankly, the opinions not only of Canadians in other provinces but also Albertans.”

Huh. Come again.

Yes, Notley takes one big political gamble. If her style scores the pipeline without selling us out, she wins.

But if she gets the same-old, same-old from Ontario and Quebec after playing all nicey-nicey with them then it is she who looks “simply ridiculous and a bit naive.”

“Stark positioning does not help move these projects forward. For me, it’s about getting a pipeline, not about positioning,” insists the Alberta premier.

During the day, a newshound asks Wall if Notley is just trying to catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

“Well, we haven’t caught any flies so far,” says Wall.
