The Alberta oil patch non-union companies drug test all the time randomly...... family members work in Alberta.

Unions in AB look like they have different rules, but if you don't want to work for a private company, don't indulge.

It is getting harder to find drug-free employees who show up reliably.

I don`t know what the fk he smokes, but the guy who lives in the alley between Pandosy, Lake and Park ave leaves around 20-30 pieces of burnt tinfoil daily on the ground.
This winter instead of just leaving his FREE daily bedding ( from Gospel Mission) on the ground and walking to get his free food downtown.
He would take a big dump on top of it because he knew he would get more.

So then you are left with drug users who do show up reliably?

WHAAAAAT? Drug users don't get the opportunity to ever show up again. I can't believe that some actually said that.

This thread is about RANDOM DRUG TESTING FOR WELFARE RECIPIENTS...

Not teachers or my neighbors who have JOBS . They can do what they want with their earnings but if I'm expected to fund a social programme like Income Assistance , I should be able to expect that it is used in respect of it's intended purpose and not to fund an addiction for someone else.

Case in point .. Am I asking YOU to buy my beer ?

Drug testing has been tried in several US states. Where they tried it it cost more to run than the savings for people kicked off. So you kick someone off welfare for using drugs. Now where do they get no at? More theft and no less drug use

More theft and no less drug use

Which increases the chances that a thief will be caught and become incarcerated.

The loss of the monthly social services payment will reduce the ability to purchase drugs on the public dole.

Why should the public be expected to pay for drugs to make an addict's life more comfortable, just so that they can come out at night and steal from the hands that are feeding their habit?

Social services money would be far better spent on the mentally handicapped and those that are clean and just need a hand up, rather than the druggies that want a hand out.

Seems like a logical thing. Smoking creates garbage and health risks. Starts forest fires. Helps nothing. Costs 300 plus a month. If you need the government to pay your way. Smoking is a luxury u can not afford

How much does Herion cost/mth?
How many dirty needles that are left behind that requires a haz-mat team to come out and clean up?
How much filth is left for others to clean up every morning?
What is the greater health risk, IV drug users or smokers?

If you drop a cigarette but on Leon, there will be 3 junkies fighting over it before it goes out. If in doubt, try it.
What kind of forest fire risk is there with homeless setting up camp in a wooded area, like Mill Creek? There is a news article about that, actually there is more than two.

How many fires has there been at these encampments over the last year alone? It's been so great that municipal fire departments have come in and declare them unsafe.

There is no test for that.

Is it okay to smoke pot or drink to still receive welfare?

Who's going to pay for all this testing, and the few hundred new government jobs at minimum that will need to be created to ensure this is implemented effectively, let alone at all.....

The Canadian government is already grasping at twigs economically, they are already in massive debt that is UNRECOVERABLE unless we cut back HUGELY... This will just be another brick in the wall in being able to change this country into one of long term stability, without major upheavals.
