Should Dix pay back his severance?

Discuss the upcoming provincial election. Keep it civil in here, people. It's not the Political Arena.

Should Dix pay back his severance?

Post by Urbane »

Remember that when Dix resigned in disgrace he maintained that he had done "nothing ethically wrong" and he happily accepted $70,000 in severance. It took him a long time to admit that he had made a terrible mistake. Now that he has made that admission why should he get to keep that severance? When you reply please refrain from telling us that you hate the Liberals. This thread is about Adrian Dix and whether or not he should give back the severance. Thanks for staying on topic.

DANIEL KIM | SUN NEWS NETWORK

On the final day of advance polls, Christy Clark's BC Liberals demanded that Adrian Dix repay the severance he received after his forged memo scandal back in 1999 when he served as Chief of Staff to then-Premier Glen Clark. Although Dix was dismissed because of the scandal, he still was given a hefty severance package of $70,000 paid for by taxpayers.

Sun News' Lisa Mrazek - who is following the NDP leader on the campaign trail - asked him the tough question yesterday in Coquitlam, BC: Will you pay back this severance money?

Dix refused to answer this question and instead shifted gears stating that people are "tired of Liberal smear politics" before leaving the podium.

Dix gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar and now he blames the Liberals for his theft.

The title of the article should read " B.C. Taxpayers want Dix to pay up".

There you go socialists....you still want this guy "managing" your money?

^^ Off topic! Since your position is that Dix did the right thing by forging the memo I'm sure you want him to keep the severance but please stay on topic. This thread is not about Christy Clark.

What does the law say? If he has openly admitted wrong-doing is there something in the rule-book that clearly states severance pay is not payable in case of proven wrong-doing? In a case involving a substantial chunk of coin it would be nice to have something in writing to lay out the proper route to follow.

As for expecting ethical behavior from a career politician of any stripe do you want the realistic answer or the way politics is conducted in heaven?

Good points Fluffy. Part of the problem here is that at the time that he received the severance Dix said that he didn't do anything "ethically wrong." Only later on did he acknowledge that he had done something wrong. Of course the very fact that he was fired or forced to resign in disgrace was a clear signal that Dix had in fact done something wrong.

I'm sure the terms of his contract stipulated whether or not severance was paid.

There is no way Dix will pay back the money. He accepted it at a time when he was telling everyone that he had done nothing wrong. Now he admits that he "owns the mistake" and acknowledges that he did wrong. He could show that he's sincere (if he actually was) by repaying the money but we all know that he isn't sincere and that he won't pay it back.

Well, why don't the Libs put their money where their mouth is and sue Dix in court to get $70K that was paid in severance back in 1999?

Any lawyer they approached with this asinine case would turn on the laugh machine!!

This is another Liberal smear.

Yawnn.....

You miss the point totally. It's not about whether or not Dix has the legal right to keep the money. It's about morality. At the time that he accepted the money he maintained that he had done nothing wrong. Now he says otherwise. He disagrees with you because you still maintain that he did nothing wrong. In fact you praise him for his actions. Anyway, now that Dix acknowledges his egregious error in judgement why shouldn't he return the money?

Requesting that Dix pay back his severance is being a Liberal apologist? Wow!
