Best non-toxic cookware

Post by Jlabute »

Hi everyone.
What would you recommend that wouldn’t break the bank? I see surgical stainless is food safe, and as someone who likes birds I can’t have PFOA or any PFC cookware in the house. Looking for something that does not put fumes in to the air or add anything in to the food, or at least minimizes it.

Depends on how much you want to spend and how many pots/pans you need. Set I purchased when I moved here set me back $1,600 - set I gave the rugrat for Christmas was on sale for $900.

I’ve read that stainless steel, copper, cast iron, and glass are the best for being non-toxic. In terms of stainless steel, most of the inexpensive cook wares tend to be 18/10 which potentially will have nickel leaching in to food. 18/0 has much less nickel, but is more prone to rust. Some companies call SS304 surgical stainless when I thought only SS316 was surgical stainless. The market is a little confusing and I’m not sure what properties of stainless I should be most concerned with. Saladmaster good grief is way over priced for what it is IMO.

Some of the links or many ads don’t even tell you what type of stainless steel it is. How critical is that you think?

Nothing wrong with 18/10 stainless steel as long as you take care of the set. My set is over 10 years old and have never had a problem with it. Rugrat's set is 8 years old and he has no complaints.

Stainless steel is one of the most common materials found in kitchens today. It's used in everything from appliances to cookware, dishware, flatware and utensils because it is durable, easy to sanitize and corrosion resistant to various acids found in meats, milk, fruits and vegetables. Most importantly though, stainless steel is a safe option when it comes to use with food and beverage, as there are no chemicals that can migrate into your food from these products.

What is Food Grade Stainless Steel?
According to the NSF International Standard for Food Equipment Material, stainless steel used in food equipment has to be of a type in the (AISI) 200 series, 300 series, or 400 series.
Let’s have a more detailed look at what these series mean.
