There is so much information out there, but the main thing that matters is calories in - calories out. North America's obesity problem is a combination of people consuming too many calories and not being active enough. You need to determine how many calories you are likely to burn in a day and then plan your diet/exercise accordingly. Find a BMR calculator to determine how many calories your body should burn in a day before any activity, then find the calculation that best describes your daily activity level to determine fairly accurately how many calories you burn a day. Then, unfortunately, you do need to pay some attention to the calories you are consuming. By increasing your daily activity and/or lowering your calorie intake so you are burning more than you are consuming, you will then start to lose weight. How quickly you lose weight will be determined by how much of a calorie deficit you create, typically the more overweight you are the easier it will be for you to start dropping pounds. When creating a diet/exercise plan you should also try to find something that you could see as a lifestyle for yourself, nobody wants to put in the work to lose the weight and then gain it all back! Remember during your weight loss journey that once you have reached your goal size (I prefer going off of size and how you feel rather than weight), you will no longer need to hit that calorie deficit because then you will be at the maintain stage. But make sure to maintain instead of reverting right back to bad habits that could make you fat again.
Eat healthier whole foods, don't overeat, and move more. You don't need to starve or kill yourself with exercise if you just go about it the right way.
Since I have not yet answered the question of "so how fat are you now?" I am in the healthy BMI range for my height and age, but I am on the higher end and I am actively working towards getting into better shape. I am slowly losing inches mainly by eating healthier and not overeating. I enjoy exercise, but that alone was not getting me the results I was after. I still enjoy sweets sometimes, I still eat carbs, I have not cut anything out entirely, I have just modified my lifestyle to help me lose weight and I see the changes I have made being something that I will be able to maintain. Find what will work for you as a lifestyle.

This guy lays it out pretty cleanly:

I’m always amazed when I hear someone saying they are up or down a pound or less..... a good pee can get rid of that, and a little drink of water can add that.....drink a liter and you add 2.2 lbs.![]()
Take a good dump and pee and it’s amazing how much weight you can "lose" in a few minutes!![]()
But since TT is talking about how fat someone is, it still comes down to eat less, not more and move more, not less.
Or go in for liposuction, but you’ll just gain it all back so why bother.
For years we have told that the solution for being overweight is to eat less and move more.
Studies of nutrition have demonstrated that eating less will result in weight loss over the short but not for long. The body dials down it's energy consumption to accommodate the fewer calories coming in.
People on severely restricted diets report being cold all the time.
The most important lesson learned is that it is the type of food ingested that is the most important. Foods high in carbohydrates and sugar promote weight gain.
Exercise alone does not burn enough calories to make much of a difference. If you want to lose weight, fasting is the way to go as it helps your body burn the fat.
Waste not

If it weren’t difficult enough, some have a much more difficult time than others due to their quantity of fat cells that always want more.

During childhood and adolescence, the number of fat cells can increase or decrease, but after the teen years the body aims at keeping the number of fat cells constant. If you are obese as a teenager or young adult when the body settles on its preferred fat cell number, this is likely to result in a greater number of fat cells in adulthood and a potential life-long weight struggle.
But the number of fat cells can also increase if you gain a lot of weight later in life. There is consensus among researchers, however, that your fat cell number doesn’t normally decrease, not even with prolonged weight loss. So, a one-time weight gain could make you struggle with your weight for the rest of your life.
Modern weight loss techniques like liposuction, which vacuums out chunks of fat from your fat depots, and cryolipolysis, which “freezes” your fat off, remove fat cells. As a result, your fat cell number goes down. But this fat is quickly regained.
