While I won't call your wife a liar , I will say that she may be just a tad bit "off" with that claim ..

I had a issue in a garage wall. We had the heat up as it was a temporary paint room.

Of course it got the ants incubate that were in larva stage. They then became hungry and came out searching. IF you smell near the find of most ants and you have a odd, strong unpleasant odor you likely have a real problem.

I pulled the dry wall off to find a large nest of carpenter ants. Killed them all and had to rebuild the wall as several studs were gone. Best to identify what they are and get after them.
