Fridge repair....and/or where to purchase a new fridge?

Post by RustyCrayon »

I think my refrigerator might be toast. The freezer still works, but the fridge is warm. Can anyone recommend a good repair person?

If I need to replace it, any recommendations for a good appliance store?

How old is it? If it's over 10-15 years then you might want to replace it.

As to where to buy a new one most places carry the same brands so you can check around for price.

Home Depot, Rona, Trail Appliances, Coast Wholesale, The Brick. etc.

I like Coast Wholesale and Home Depot for starters.

Call Wagner's Appliance on (97 @ Leathhead for repair. It sounds to me like a plugged pipe. If the freezer works and the fridge doesn't, something is plugged.

Your fridge will have a compressor. It looks like a big sealed pop can. Feel under side of the can. If it is warm. Your fridge has leaked out its refrigerant gas and the repair will likely be costly.

Also if the back is covered in dust/dirt then it can't cool properly. With an older fridge with all the cooling vanes in the back this can be the cause. (ask me how I know)

ps, don't buy a Samsung with an ice maker! Do some research.

pss, I do believe the compressor is always warm when running.

I agree with that, and you are better off to buy a new one.

I agree with not buying Samsung. I have had issues with ALL of my Samsungs.......except my computer monitor.

Sorry should have clarified. Unplug for 24 hrs. Then check compressor. If it has gas in it . The gas will settle under the compressor oil . Sitting on bottom of compressor. If it is not cold under the compressor after sitting unplugged 24 hrs. It is fairly good indicator something expensive to repair might be wrong . If gas has leaked out. The leak needs to be sealed. If lucky compressor is ok. Even still be an hr or 2 of a techs time. Plus parts plus gas.

The BEST one to give advice on this matter is Bpeep.

She KNOWS refrigeration and has a red seal to prove it.

Well I unplugged the fridge at about 10:45 this morning. By 8 pm there was a pool of water in the freezer (the freezer is on the bottom of the fridge on this model) cleaned it up and then a half hour later there was more water. Some of it was brown. Not sure what that means. Repair guy is coming by tomorrow.

The water is possibly a good sign. With a bit of look it was just the evaporator froze up. If that was the case it would stop the fridge from cooling. Try plugging it back in. See if it works. Might just save yourself some cash.

We were in Home Depot yesterday and the sign in the appliance department claims they will beat any price by 10%

Which leads me to believe it is a blockage problem. Keep the doors open to ensure that it is completely thawed out and until all the water has stopped.

If you have to buy a new one I trust Carol at Coast Appliances
Repairs can be so costly might be less expensive in the long run to get a new one. My washer repair was over $600.

I wouldn't buy anywhere but Costco.
