Thanks but with all the free information out there I'm not prepared to pay them for it.RVThereYet wrote:Use Consumer Reports, we've found them to be the most reliable and have used them for years.

I had a subscription to consumer reports once. It was useless because durability was one one of the criteria they used to grade appliances.

I hate my fridge, it's one where stuff gets lost in space and it hurts to try to find it.
I needed a new fridge years ago. Here's the thing, new fridges are as JLives says, built to die soon.
Why give up a working fridge I hate for a working fridge which is not going to be working, likely during the Christmas season?
I have never believed the lowest price is the way to go in anything. But what brand to put in?

I hear you. I purchased a home with a fridge I HATED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Conventional, freezer on top fridge on the bottom. You'd have to get on your knees to see what was in it !Queen K wrote:I hate my fridge, it's one where stuff gets lost in space and it hurts to try to find it.

I would have waited until it blew up, and I was hoping to hear the explosion.....
I helped a good friend finish building a house. I'm retired, I was more than happy to work along side him. He generously and not expected, gave my wife and I a gift certificate for Home Depot. I had been kidding him that he was putting in a side by side fridge that I loved.
With the certificate (I regarded as "stolen money") I purchase a side by side LG and because "it wasn't my money" contrary to normal, I purchase the extended warrantee. It's like betting that the thing you bought is junk and you expect it to fall apart.
The repairman and I are on a first name basis, after the end of the five year warrantee the warrantee company called and asked if I wanted to extend the warrantee for another 3 years. YES ! $500,,,, sure. Thanks !!!!
100% correct Queen K.
PS love your icon,,, Maine *bleep* ? I miss my Squatch (short for Sasquatch [big foot]) as my Squatch was a polydactylyl, as many Maine Coons are. Gave great massages.

And I believe Maestro may have had some Maine *bleep* in him. He's on the rainbow bridge, I'll ask some day.

If you want to spend the money but have it last, buy a Sub-Zero. Really really good and durable. Plus, the counter depth is nice for fitting in.Queen K wrote:I am afraid. Re: What is the Best Kitchen Appliance Brand?
My fridge is a Samsung, it's worked well so far. My stove is from 1991 and beat up as it is, I don't expect to be replacing it soon (Kenmore). My Kenmore dishwasher is a non-working piece of junk which will eventually be replaced.
When my freezer died, I researched brands and the thing that came up most was - as expected - durability. They just aren't making things like they used to. So, with that in mind, I figured, what is wrong with buying used? We got our "new" freezer from Eric's Refrigeration. I think it was built sometime in the early 90's - it had been reconditioned. Works like a charm, and oodles cheaper than buying new.
Just a thought.

Always an option. Our Samsung fridge has given us problems. Circuit board went on it. $500 to get it fixed!Lady tehMa wrote:My fridge is a Samsung, it's worked well so far. Used to be that only 1 or 2 companies made all the freezers. I think that has changed now but Frigidare makes them with several different brand names on them.
We saw a GE Profile model the other day that we like the look of.

GE is the king of planned of obsolescence. I discovered this the hard way after spending $20/lightbulb, and all four died within a year. Also, if you look at their ratings on the LED bulbs, they are often 5 to 10 thousand hours less then Philips and other competitors.

Re: What is the Best Kitchen Appliance Brand?
I've never thought buying an extended warrantee was a good plan on a new item, it was sort of gambling that the product you just purchased was a lemon. I felt if the product was that poor, I should be buy a different make.
I've re-thought that with the new appliances. My LG refrigerator has had several visits from the "doctor". After the expiry of the extended coverage, the insurance company phone me after the ins expired and asked if I wanted to re-new "YES !"
Sad, really.

Present stove is an Eaton Viking - came with the house back in 1996 and still going strong. Stove in other home is a 50's circa Moffat double-oven, 4 burner with a 5th burner that can be used as a regular element or lowered and used as a soup/stew well. Had to replace thermostat once and besides replacing the occasional fuse, no issues.

I have a 9 year old Samsung stove with ceramic top. Previous stove (whatever it was had the oven glass broken by daughters boyfriend). Only thing to go wrong with the Samsung recently is one of the burners stays on too long... I suppose it is a thermostat issue, or potentiometer issue. The finish near the knob has yellowed over the years and maybe moisture damage to the control has happened.
