Typing "Keyboarding" Tests
Has anyone here ever done the pre-employment typing tests at the College? Looking for someone who has recently done them so I will know what to expect.

Re: Typing Tests
Don't they call it "keyboarding" now?
I remember "typing" as a key striking a ribbon with a piece of paper in the carriage.
Spell check was a dictionary, correcting a typing error......required "white-out" and dry time.
Pre-electric.

Can't remember the last typing test I took but you're given a page to type within a certain period. Some tests keep track of backspacing, corrections, etc. which determines the final result.
If you want to practice before taking the test, here's an online test

I concur with babe - that should give you a good idea.
Back in 89 and again in 2005 my test scores to get into courses were 32 wpm and 40 something. I took that test twice and my speed first time through was 56 wpm and then 61. I like how it takes your errors into consideration and adjusts. I make a lot more errors now than I used to but I'm faster overall.

Did you cheat and use both hands? OR like me, and only use one finger on one hand? Except when a CAPITAL is required.Lady tehMa wrote:I concur with babe - that should give you a good idea.

In 2001, the test was done in the computer lab using the Windows word processing app ‘Notepad.’ Notepad does not have spell check or autocorrect. During the course I took, our speed and accuracy were tested and our skills honed using a program with advanced keystroke analytics. I have no knowledge about current entrance evaluations. It wouldn’t surprise me if things haven’t changed, though.

Re: Typing Tests
They do look for speed and accuracy. And yes, the new tests are usually thrown in front of you on a screen and you're supposed to keep up. The tests are usually so irrelevant to the actual position needing to be filled...but so be it.gardengirl wrote:Thanks for the history lessons, but I am asking for a reason.

I hired a couple employment agencies to try to help me find staff and that's how they tried to "vent" people to work for me. Never again. I don't care if you can type a million words a minute if you're a mental midget when it comes to dealing with customers, or can't add 2+2.
And yes gardengirl, 9 of the 12 replies to your legitimate question were classic Castanet trolls...WE ALL KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING. Ugh...

Yes, I caught the part where you said that it wouldn't surprise you if anything has changed. It has definitely changed since a Notepad typing exam in the 80"s. lmaokgcayenne wrote:In 2001, the test was done in the computer lab using the Windows word processing app ‘Notepad.’ Notepad does not have spell check or autocorrect. Advanced keystroke analytics? bahahahaaaaa
I designed a Canadian Flag graphic using the first Apple II computer that was installed at KSS in 1984. I got an "A".
You self admitted you have no knowledge about current entrance evaluations. Things have changed a lot. These tests are now done through a windows based real time exam. So why embarrass or date yourself?
Just a bit different than when we took the exams.

Re: Typing "Keyboarding" Tests
The last one I did was in 2014. It was a webpage app. The screen was broken into two boxes; Top and Bottom. The box at the top had the correct paragraphs that I had to transcribe into the bottom box.gardengirl wrote:Has anyone here ever done the pre-employment typing tests at the College? Because it's a computer, it was matching every single space and letter I typed. Errors were captured both if I made and fixed them, (which were not counted against me outside of my WPM going down), and errors I did not catch which gave me an error percentage.
The results aren't important, but that was the test I did. Speed was #1, but if your error rate was too high, you were disqualified.
EDIT* THIS WAS NOT DONE AT THE COLLEGE. This is just an example of a typing test I did for employment.

Thanks, but I am still interested in hearing from someone who has done the one at the College.youjustcomplain wrote: The last one I did was in 2014.
