Fire pits are not allowed in Kelowna so it would have to be natural gas or propane.oldtrucker wrote:
For the rooftop deck...why not? You could use it in the cooler months. If it were me, and depending on where this place is, I'd find a old fireplace insert or something like that with bricks placed under and around it so I could have a BBQ/fire.

I keep wondering what the difference between having a "yard" on the ground or on the roof?
If you want shade, get an umbrella. There are lots of solutions.
Perhaps some think that you are closer to the sun so that makes a huge difference?

A yard on the ground - would depend on what the yard is made of. If grass it will absorb heat. If asphalt/concrete/rock it will magnify it. On the roof, same deal. When it gets really bloody hot, would you rather sit in your driveway, or on the lawn? Whether in shade or not the composition of the surface you are on does matter with regards to thermal output.LANDM wrote:I keep wondering what the difference between having a "yard" on the ground or on the roof?

I walk down Sunset Drive on the way to work. If you've ever seen it after a good windstorm you will see seat cushions and occasionally furniture that has been blown off decks and patios from the townhomes and towers. It happens fairly often. Just Thursday I noticed a pair of seat covers (the kind with ties

I haven't failed until I quit.

Pretty difficult to hide the smoke.oldtrucker wrote: Never looked into the laws and never had anyone say anything to me. I'll take a old BBQ shell and bury it halfway so the lid can open and close with the bottom under ground. Instant fire pit in 5 min.

Kind of difficult to bury a BBQ on a rooftop patio. (which is the topic)oldtrucker wrote:Never looked into the laws and never had anyone say anything to me. I'll take a old BBQ shell and bury it halfway so the lid can open and close with the bottom under ground. Instant fire pit in 5 min.

Lady T - yes, that was a worry. Even when the builder said to build a wall I thought wouldn't drilling into the membrane compromise it?
And if was def far hotter up there than ground level.

I wonder what the Fireman would say to that as he hands you the fine for open burning.oldtrucker wrote: Never looked into the laws and never had anyone say anything to me.

The right tree will last FOREVER , give you clean air and looks better than any umbrella I've ever found ..If you want shade, get an umbrella. There are lots of solutions.
So you have to rake a few leaves in the fall ..
No big deal .

Then, I wonder how much that BBQ would cost you when the insurance company declines your claim when your house burns down.oldtrucker wrote:Right...so get half a steel drum filled with dirt...it makes the fire pit bottom stable and protects from heat. Fire pit and BBQ in one. Protects for up to what temperature? AND one would now still have to pack firewood through the house to the rooftop patio. It would be better to have to carry a propane bottle and connect it to a CSA approved BBQ/fire-pit.Bsuds wrote:Kind of difficult to bury a BBQ on a rooftop patio. (which is the topic)
I have a official Saskatchewan Redneck Exemption Card.Bsuds wrote:I wonder what the Fireman would say to that as he hands you the fine for open burning.
Are you willing to risk your home for a redneck BBQ?
Backwoods rednecks don't do well, after they are taken out of their normal habitat. Just think of an crocodile on Bernard Ave........

I like the idea of a patio on a roof so long as drainage is done properly. Could be a nice place to tan, or a midnight observatory depending where you are. Great idea for a carriage house. Might consider half roof half patio, an upstairs home for ham radio equipment or something, right beside your bbq or telescope, lol

It could be awful or it could be great. For various reasons.
If you are diligent and responsible types, you can use umbrellas/sunshades and such to shelter a full-exposure or south-facing deck without losing them to the wind. You could control that frying pan effect and have a great time out there.
There's an iPhone/iPad app called Sun Surveyor, and you can use Street View or live view to find out where the sun will be at any given time of day.
On May long weekend, walk by few of your potentials at around 11pm-midnight and listen carefully. You will get a glimpse of what summer will be like every night. Some people like to live outside until late into the evenings, and you may or may not like hearing all the details of their conversations lulling you to sleep. Although, if that's what you like to do, then you'd fit right in to the theme of the hood. If the neighbourhood is a quiet one, and you like to be out sharing your life with guests over a case-o-bud and/or box-o-wine, you will meet with opposition. Don't do it. Don't ruin yours and your neighbours' summers. Quiet people protect their environments, and are full of lots of energy to make the mornings of your late nights as uncomfortable as
.

There really are people who set up tables and patio furniture and pretty-much live in the driveway and/or carport. Unless your lifestyle is the same, you do not want to live beside such people.Lady tehMa wrote:...would you rather sit in your driveway, or on the lawn?
