As I posted on the "poll" thread: That is very unfortunate. Many candidates in this election are very easy to communicate with and are very responsive to questions.

If you'd prefer to talk in person, rather than via email or an online platform, perhaps attend a forum, like tonight's Mission Residents Association forum - or visit a campaign office.

I understand that Colin's house in West Kelowna is currently for sale. He lives in West Kelowna as his wife was unable to find work in Kelowna until recently and currently works at Penticton Hospital - so the commute is a little fairer. Anyone who dealt with bridge traffic (and then Westside Road interchange traffic) would understand that.

My understanding is that, as she has since found work at KGH they will be moving back to Kelowna in the near future.

Colin was born and raised on this side of the lake. From what I see, he is at least as passionate about this city than any other candidate and it would be an incredibly bad decision an the part of the electorate if he were to not gain a seat due to this non-issue.

Let's not blind ourselves by some sort of imaginary divide here.

I agree and feel it's a bit of a conflict of interest for someone to post in this thread when they are also running for Council. She loses credibility with me by doing that. Keep it up as it helps narrow the choices as there are too many to start with.
But Black Mountain is part of Kelowna, so that's a non issue and I'm not in Black Mountain anyway. That's farther up Highway 33 and on the other side of the road. Being a candidate doesn't take away the fact that I'm also a voter in this city and i should be allowed to have an opinion...it's a council that will be representing me, as well as you. It's a legitimate question no matter who's asking it. It's ultimately up to the individual voter to decide if it's an issue or not.

Excellent post. I agree if Basran wins, tough if people in Kelowna want to talk to him, they should get all their questions to him by email or go to him, across the bridge, and who knows how far up the other side, he also wasn't open enough to include his address.

Basran needs to win, clearly he wants it that bad he is running in a city he doesn't live in. I say we elect him, elect other councillors from West Kelowna and save time for their commute by moving city hall across the bridge. THAT IS A GREAT IDEA.

I'm not too concerned about where he lives. But having the slimeball greedy CUPE back him is a death sentence on election day. Colin has a LOT to learn about aligning with leftists in conservative Kelowna!

Clearly where he lives doesn't matter because they wouldn't have accepted his notification would they??? This is a guy whose family has resided in the valley since incorporation. At the Habitat last week he was one of the few new candidates that actually answered the question asked without repeating someone else, or a bunch of ahs and umms or you knows (Ms Batt) . . . but if you think he’s not qualified to be on council, than state why, but if because his postal code for his personal residence is on the other side of the bridge than you may be missing out on a worthy capable councilor. I am learning very quickly that most of the posts on here or opinion and emotional, rather than fact and reason.

Of course it matters where he lives at time of election. Otherwise any one in BC can run. Then anyone in BC should be allowed to vote in Kelowna elections as well. There are rules. The rules are very democratic. Lets stick with them as they are.

So, by the same argument, an endorsement from Fourchange will just kill his campaign.

This is a fantastic example of the attitudes that polute US politics spreading North, where I thought we were more intelligent and balanced in our approach.

I can hear the next stage of these lines of thought already:

"He lives in West Kelowna - he must be planning to triple our taxes and then drive over the bridge to use facilities his hasn't paid for. Plus it makes him akin to an alien."

"He's got support from CUPE. He must be a communist."

"He's got support from FourChange. He must be a facist."

Step out of your ridiculous closed-minded attitudes and try looking at candidates on their merits: qualifications, platform, passion, vision.

Well said Richard, but you may be being a bit optimistic in hoping the typical voter actually researches and uses logic in making their decisions.

All candidates receive multiple questionnaires from various interest groups. See http://www.electmarkthompson.com/main.html
for some of them. All an endorsement from CUPE means is that they answered the questions "correctly". Without seeing the questions, I'd have difficulty rejecting a candidate based on an endorsements.
I am a little concerned about residency because that says quite a bit to me about priorities. I hope Colin Basran addresses that issue because he's certainly one of my picks but I'd like to hear from him why he chose West Kelowna.

Likely to be the same answer as I got from him when I asked:

Lives in West Kelowna as his wife was unable to find work in Kelowna & works (worked) at Penticton Hospital. She has found work recently at KGH so their house is on the market and as soon as it sells they will be moving back to Kelowna.

Won't be enough for some, but as far as I'm concerned the question (which was very pertinent) has been asked and answered and shouldn't effect anybody's decision on whether to vote for the guy.

In recent days some concerns have been raised about the fact that I am running for City Council in Kelowna while living in West Kelowna. I want to assure voters that I am completely committed to Kelowna and making it a better city for all. My family has deep roots in Kelowna, having arrived in the Rutland area in 1907. My parents met while attending Rutland High School and they continue to reside in Rutland today.

I was born and raised in Kelowna and in my 33 years, I have only lived outside of Kelowna for a short time, most recently when I lived in Penticton while working for CHBC Television. My wife and I made the decision to move back to the Kelowna area two years ago to be closer to friends, family and to allow me to work at Royal Lepage in Kelowna. However my wife was unable to find work at the Kelowna General Hospital so for financial reasons it was best she keep her job at the hospital in Penticton. She asked if I would be willing to live in West Kelowna to shorten her commute and like any good partner, I agreed to the compromise.

Lucky for us, my wife has recently gained employment at the Kelowna General Hospital and therefore we have listed our home for sale. As soon as it sells we will be moving back home to Kelowna. I work in Kelowna, shop in Kelowna, have family and friends in Kelowna and my heart is in Kelowna. I am so thankful for those who are supporting my campaign because they know how important the city and its future are to me. For more information on my campaign, please feel free to visit my website and I thank you all for your continued support.

I love it how some seem so hell-bent on crucifying others before they have all the facts.

Thanks for the explanation, Colin.

I have to re-post this here as well... I am so frustrated with this intellectually offensive subject!

Are we actually going to judge someones character and qualities based on his temporary physical location? What's next, which side of the bed he prefers to sleep on!? Seriously, if someone has an issue with this, get in touch with the candidate and ask for clarifications, but don't start a needless debate (candidly, a gossip thread) on this irrelevant subject! We need to vote based on what the person brings to the table and his ability to perform as our representative in this stagnant city council. Colin, I respect how patient you are with this childish subject and frankly, glad you put this to rest. I would much rather know more about your plans for my city instead of your private family affairs.

I was pleased with your speech last night at the debate, you really are one of the few that stood out and made a serious impression. Glad you are running.

Guys/Gals, let's keep thing in perspective. Attacking someone because they live across the bridge is taking away from the real issues that Kelowna is facing. I personally could not care less if all of our City Councilors lived in West Kelowna (or Winfield or elsewhere), as long as they helped our city move forward (instead of stagnating it for the last 3 years). The place of residence is, in my opinion, is not nearly as important as the person's character, platform and vision for our city.

Look at the platform people! Not the mailing address. Colin will be a great addition to the City Council and I hope that you'll vote him in. I know I will.
