Out of towners running for council

HI folks , Just wondering why some candidates running for office in Penticton that live outside the city boundaries are running for a council seat.. Shouldn't you be running for the regional district ... We have enough people trying to tell us how we should be running our fair city..We already have a Mayor who lives out of town and we don't need anymore...

In Julius Bloomfields case, he was upfront and admitted that most of his Real Estate sales are in the Naramata area and so for him to run there he felt that it would cause conflict. Admiral of him to admit that and be honest. I'm starting to like the chap. This is the exact reason that I will not vote for any realtor in Penticton who runs for council; there are far too many real estate decisions around the council table that could cause the person to be in conflict and forced to leave the room. Same goes for Gary Leaman; his past record of running the Mall cause him to be in conflict if any downtown issues come up and he "should" leave the room. Thats my opinion, anyways.

I don’t have any issue with people such as Ashton, Bloomfield, Konanz or others running for a seat on council. I appreciate experience, competency and leadership attributes over a postal code. But’s that just me. The upside to democracy is that if you think only people who live within City limits should be able to run for Council then you can vote accordingly.

So let me get this straight, you won't vote in a realtor into council because of conflict issues but you would vote in a realtor as mayor???? I think most people are involved in real estate in one way or another and no matter what you do for full time work conflicts will always arise. This is why I have no problems voting for a realtor, nurse, city worker, businessperson etc. to me they are all the same. Look around town, I'm sure you'll see his signs around.

I've actually had a complete change of heart on the subject and after talking to a couple of these realtor candidates, I may be supporting them afterall. They seem to understand the possible conflicts that could occur and are willing to accept sometimes having to leave the room. Admission is a huge part of honesty and I admire that. Jeannie has my vote now and I'm still uncertain if Katie or Julius will get my X for mayor; both would be good for the city. D.A. is not on my list at all, nor Pearce; nor any one of the present council. Their time is up.

There is a sort of irony to the fact that Katie Robinson takes a not so subtle dig at Ashton and Bloomfield for not living in Penticton on her election signs and yet both Ashton and Bloomfield are way more active and visible in the community then Katie Robinson who has been all but invisible in spite of living within city boundaries.


I have yet to decide who I will vote for as Mayor but I can say it will NOT be Katie Robinson. I have yet to hear ANY reason to vote for Katie. No platform, no ideas, nothing but the usual fluff with no substance. Katie needs to step up and tell us what she would actually do if she was in the Mayor’s chair. The clock is running.....
