Homosexuality is an abomination to god?

Post by coffeeFreak »

This is a few years old, but worth posting:

An Open Letter to Dr. Laura

On her radio show sometime prior to 2004, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following response is an
open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law.

I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ... End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Law and how to follow them.

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. The passage clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we
just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your adoring fan,

Cute, but just don't actually use this as an argument with someone who does follow what the Bible says. Why? Because Christians are not under the law and certain things have been repeated as to what to do and not do and how God feels about them.

I'm personally not giving you my opinion on this subject, but just in case someone thought they could use this cute letter as a defense, they can't, that is unless they're orthodox jews and then they can.

Sooooooooooooooo only Orthodox Jews know what Leviticus says is "true" and the word of god? A Christian does not know what is the word of god in Leviticus?

About those Jewish football players ....

Christians may know all about what it says, but are not under(or follow)it. After Jesus, it was a whole new ball game, so you can take the gloves off and throw that pigskin granny! You're not orthodox jew are you? In that case you would have to keep the gloves on.....sorry.

Ah, so it's a pick and choose thing.

If I get you right, Christians don't have to follow what the Old Testament says because that was before the time of the nail-the-guy-to-the-cross time. Wouldn't that also include the 10 commandments? Or is that not subject to picking and choosing?
You cannot reason someone out of a position that they did not use reason to arrive at.

That would include them, however they too were replaced with a new law, which covered pretty much all 10. Jesus gave that new law by the way, so all Christian are to follow it.

That's what is so great about being an atheist - I don't have to do what any religion or their fairy tale tells me to. If I want to play with piggy parts, I can. If I want to eat meat on Friday, I can. If I want to sleep in on Sunday, I can. If I want to have electricity in my home, I can. If I want to have a same sex partner, I can. If I want to have six opposite sex partners, I can.

Ok, so if you're a christian and it's written in the New Testament you follow it, but if it's in the old you don't have to cuz the new overwrote the old?
Not criticising just asking for clarification?

As I've always been a big foggy on the whole Old/New thing and what rules apply to whom

Pretty much true, there is much more to it but Christians have an entirely different way of worship, as we have no Temple arrangement and Earthly High Priest and animal sacrifices and so forth. We don't travel to the Temple in Jerusalem three time per year either. Of course that was destroyed and not rebuilt, so technically Orthodox Jews cannot follow the law either, but try telling them that.

Before Christ the Jews kept separate from the surrounding nations but after there was no more distinction between the two groups,(Jews and everyone else) and virtually no repeating of the laws the Jews followed were given them.

Okey dokey, Thanks, so Newtestament is basically Oldtestament 2.0.

Is there a version that comes after that?
one that adapts to the changing culture or is that 2.0 version "the one"
what about the parts where one part of the NT seems to sorta contradict another part...

I think the Bible is an abomination to God. Old men trying to presume they were "divinely inspired". Pass the joint :136:

(in the quest for spiritual illumination there is no room for archaic religious dogma)

Seems so odd for Christians to worship a Jew. Was God Jewish, too? Of course, Mary's family came from England (or so that story goes) so Jesus was only half Jewish. Does God support mixed religion marriages?

Ya I don't believe in it either. I'm third generation no religion.
But I meet and still have to interact with lots of people who do believe it all and sometimes it makes my life easier if I can at least know where the "logic" comes from.

Several. The Quran, the Adi Granth, the Book of Mormon, to name just a few that are "continuations" after Christ but as Nebula said it's a pick and choose kinda thing, except it seems people largely let their parents and culture choose for them.

Sure, it's called consumer capitalism 5.0. Didn't our parents and western culture choose it for us "non-believers"?
