If you don't want to call it racism, fine. I won't disagree then. Everybody is entitled to a view.

The remarks, however were not sensitive to first nations. In my opinion

The world has done unjust to natives, blacks, jewish people. The list goes on, and still goes on.

We can at least have compassion, to not use the words this lady did. Trying to pummel a certain race into extinction is not cool, and we need to realize the hardship we put these people thru. I am white, I realize this.

I do agree we need to work ourselves into a system, that is equal to everbody. It doesn't start by talking down on people trying to steamroll them.

If you are steamrolled by the truth then so be it. She wasn't attempting to vilify anyone. She merely spoke a truth.

You like many others are confused between what is real and what many would have you believe is real.

If I tell you that in my country, there is a province who while only accounting for 10% of the population and speak a different language than the majority do not recognize my language (grudgingly maybe) in their Province but insist that their language is given equal billing throughout the rest of the country, is that being racist?

If I tell you the the prison system in the United States is heavily populated with black or Hispanic people, am I racist?

If I comment that the majority of basketball players in the NBA are predominantly black, am I racist?

If I tell you that in Canada, indigenous native people do not have to abide by many of the rules that non native Canadians do, is that being racist?

Or is that simply being truthful?

Why does that *bleep* so many of you off?

Anyone who disagree's with her statements is a racist by my books. Making different rules and exceptions for a group of people based upon their "race" is just that. They are equal to you and I, let them be treated equal... by saying that they need assistance and funding and help and so on only shows that you believe they are "below" the rest of the population. Get with the times...its not the 1800's anymore, we are ALL equal in this world, and this should start NOW!

Quebec has never asked that the French language be “given equal billing throughout the rest of the country”.

And if someone tells me that, no, that is not being racist. Ignorant maybe. Not racist.

Quebec has never asked that the French language be “given equal billing throughout the rest of the country”.

Both languages are official in the province of Quebec, too, but not in any other province—and naturally the French do not like this. They insist that they should have in the other provinces the same rights as English Canadians have in Quebec.

First Nations are increasingly generating what's called "own-source revenue."

The communities also get revenue from land claims settlements and successful lawsuits, selling treaty land and a small amount from other levels of government mainly for land and resource sharing, which is what any other `settler`or business company has done.

The Royal Proclamation of 1763 states that land cannot be transferred from First Nations to `settlers`it has to be transferred to the crown first or the land has been negotiated in a treaty. This is enshrined in section 25 of the Constitution Act. If the `settlers`want the land or the resources there needs to be negotiation and money transfers. This Act and process has NEVER been overturned.

The British North America Act of 1867, traded 40% of Canada`s land mass for `services`such as education, health, social services, roads, housing, water and waste management. If the cost of these services goes up, then the cost of the original agreement goes up. The First Nations did not negotiate for `too low`of a settlement, this is a fluid agreement that changes as the needs of the people change. If the `settlers`don`t want to continue to pay rent, give up the 40% of Canada that was negotiated.

Dayleen and everyone who continues to agree with her, does not know the historical agreement.

I don`t believe that her view is racist, just ignorant.

^ Seems rather obvious what she's best at is shooting her mouth off, and fighting for driveways. I can't see a stubborn loudmouth being of much benefit to any area that they might represent as an MLA.

Successful politicians have the ability to employ tact where necessary, plus they know that defiantly "digging in their heels" as I believe she stated, will not get them very far.

If the goal is to put in place a person who has no reservations about speaking their mind, demonstrates a distinct level of ignorance in multiple areas, and at the same time, being an independent, has no teeth or pull whatsoever in the legislature, hence no influence to act on her constituents behalf with a measure of success, then I suppose she'd be a great choice for Kelowna-Mission.

It is not surprising that your reference is based on a pamphlet about Canada produced by Americans.

Agree 100%
Not to attack an individual personally I would only offer that in the immediate area of her home business there were very aggressive confrontations with workers doing their job on civil work as well as anger demonstrated towards others working/volunteering in the area. I would not want to be represented by someone that hangs huge signs publically airing their dirty laundry along a highway, yes freedom of speech is one thing, but being tempered and showing self control and keeping personal disputes out of the public are qualities I would consider preferable in an MLA representing me. Leaves me with questions about motivation for running, lawsuit against government, why not get inside, hang out in Victoria and see where that takes my dispute...

So what you're saying is that Americans have no authority to speak of any subject non-American?

We speak of American historical events in Canadian schools. Should we stop?

“So what you're saying is that Americans have no authority to speak of any subject non-American?”

No. But we shouldn’t rely only on American sources for facts about Canada.

Did you know that the article to which you referred does not have any references and was published in 1946?

Any other more relevant reference?

Heartily agree. They have enough trouble remembering their own location, and doubtful many could do that were it not for the advent of GPS. :D

That is an interesting document, and one I will have to learn more about. There appears to be some dispute about whether it applies to areas west of the rockies.

Dawnland wrote:The British North America Act of 1867, traded 40% of Canada`s land mass for `services`such as education, health, social services, roads, housing, water and waste management. Please provide more detail on this, as your interpretation appears to go well beyond what is written in the BNA. The only reference I could find relating to the lands is Paragraph 91 which describes the powers retained by Parliament, not the provinces:

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/British_N ... _Act,_1867

91. It shall be lawful for the Queen, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate and House of Commons, to make Laws for the Peace, Order, and good Government of Canada, in relation to all Matters not coming within the Classes of Subjects by this Act assigned exclusively to the Legislatures of the Provinces; and for greater Certainty, but not so as to restrict the Generality of the foregoing Terms of this Section, it is hereby declared that (notwithstanding anything in this Act) the exclusive Legislative Authority of the Parliament of Canada extends to all Matters coming within the Classes of Subjects next hereinafter enumerated; that is to say,
......
24. Indians, and Lands reserved for the Indians.

The official languages of Canada are English and French, which "have equality of status and equal rights and privileges as to their use in all institutions of the Parliament and Government of Canada" according to Canada's constitution

Only Quebec has declared itself officially unilingual (French only).
