Why do we sometimes 'Swear on the Bible?'

Have you ever been told to put your hand on the bible and swear on the bible?

What exactly does that mean?

^ If Dick Cheney can swear on the bible, doesn't that automatically make it completely useless
to expect anyone anywhere on earth to tell the truth when he swears on the bible?

I refused to when I was a witness in a court case so I had to swear an oath. It's kind of silly really.

I just don't swear. Polite people don't swear.

You have the choice of answering the question "Do swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God"

Or you may affirm.


    Oaths and Solemn Affirmations

    Who may administer oaths

    13. Every court and judge, and every person having, by law or consent of parties, authority to hear and receive evidence, has power to administer an oath to every witness who is legally called to give evidence before that court, judge or person.

    R.S., c. E-10, s. 13.

    Solemn affirmation by witness instead of oath

    14. (1) A person may, instead of taking an oath, make the following solemn affirmation:

    "I solemnly affirm that the evidence to be given by me shall be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."


    Effect

    (2) Where a person makes a solemn affirmation in accordance with subsection (1), his evidence shall be taken and have the same effect as if taken under oath.

The whole exercise is silly though. Am I going to say no?

Swear on the bible or don't swear, that part does not matter at all. What does matter is telling the truth, if someone decides not to tell the truth. That will comeback to bite that person in *bleep* at a later date, if found out. So why risk it.


Of course there are so many version of the bible out there now, here's interesting little tidbit Matthew 5:34
I don't give a damn whether people/posters like me or dislike me, I'm not on earth to win any popularity contests.
