The issue of adding tourist accommodation will be discussed at a public hearing and special meeting of council Monday night at the Cleland Community Theatre in Penticton. You know ... something tells me there is more to this story. Council is really pushing hard to move this forward - why? I guarantee you public input will not change what council is up to. How do you say ..."here we go again".

How is there a shortage of hotel rooms close to the convention center when the largest ones are within walking distance. There is a glut of hotel beds already with most of them empty most of the year. There is something more to this.

Does anyone else really wonder what the hell this council is up to? I know Penticton has had a rat problem but wow I smell one big rat in this latest move.

It would be difficult or near impossible to determine exactly what is going on, as its all done behind closed doors. Open and Transparent? Ya, about as much so as the School Board and the $17,000 raise to the top dog. I hope the media tries their best to get the full story on the issue. I expect it will end up much like the Hockey Dorm Fiasco.

I did try to warn you guys. After only 5 months in office these clowns are making the days of Ashton with Albas and Vas on council look like slices of Wonder Bread.
I would also remind you that for the previous two terms of council, there was one person that did not want to ever sell any City owned land. He even voted against the sale of the hockey dorm property. The only one that did.
Unfortunately bike lane guy won the last race. Does anyone seriously think that a hotel development on a city ball park would even make it to the agenda of a council meeting had the other guy won?
Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

I didn't vote for any of these dudes, twobits. I voted for one mayor and it wasn't the one who won, unfortunately...and I only voted for three councillors; the rest weren't worth a second look and that's sure evident now.

Just happened to come across this story from the Penticton Herald. Some interesting comments.

I hate to say it but Kimberley is right. It's a shame to see his legacy project for the community turned into corporate greed.

What happens to the Community Centre when this hotel is built on the backs of taxpayers? Why are we selling our personal investments?

I'm all for a fancy hotel, but not at the cost of an investment that isn't paid for yet. There is nothing wrong with the lot across the street.

TwoBits I'm with you. Mr. V never would have allowed this to happen.

I personally think the fancy hotel will not attract more conventions. Unless they are going after a Fairmont type hotel, the Ramada and the Lakeside offer fancy enough rooms.

Static, I think that is the type of hotel they have in mind.

I believe it would have a maximum of 120 rooms and that alone is not going to attract bigger conventions that the city claims are not coming at the present time due to space limitations. It may be coincidence, maybe not, but when Jimmy O. quit the city and went to manage the convention centre in Nanaimo, I believe he took a lot of those conventions with him and many have not returned. Whats really frustrating is that the El Rancho claims to have lost one or more parties who were interested in buying their property for a Hotel. Now, they are no longer interested? This proposal should have never been given a second thought by the city; it should be strictly a private property purchase on nearby lands that ARE available.

So I see the Mayor Jak is being BOLD again ... in the enclosed story it talks about how he has been in discussions with a casino group who are looking at the Power St. location and other locations. Hummm ... wonder if these discussions occurred prior to the city wanting to rezone the park property? Just wondering ... not trying to take away the boldness of this new council.

So is the city being suckered into investing in this high-risk venture then?
