Why can't our government have fire awareness signs?
In the sixties and seventies we had Smoky the bear with a shovel on Big Highway signs that said,
ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES....
And I think another with a big huge cigarette that spoke of preventing fires..
So what is the deal here, Anyone else think a few signs to promote awareness, would really be a detriment or a financial drain on our province? ? ?

I remember those! I think promoting awareness is great but I think the careless people that are causing these fires couldn't care less about any signs. Signs don't fix stupid.

What do you consider those giant fire hazard rating signs that are all over the place?
I doubt a bear would have any more impact, on those displaying a total lack of regard for warnings and regulations.

If you look around in your travels, BC Wildfire Service has hundreds of prevention and hazard signs throughout the province including the number to call if you spot a fire.
And justice for all..............

We had three of note here in the Kelowna area. One was at the start of the Gillard Creek Forest Road. It disappeared when the subdivision there started. One before Mission Creek on Hwy 33 which was weather worn and then vandalized, there is a 2' x 8' Campfire Ban sign there right now.. Another at the Big White turnoff which was taken down during construction of the new turnoff to Big White. The one on the highway will eventually be repaired and a new sign put up. The Big White junction one will be relocated to another location eventually. There is also a big sign at James Lake. These are all 4' x 8' signs.

Those Smokey The Bear signs are all over Cascades down to Snoqualmie.
I thought Smokey was a US thing.

Yup he is a US citizen. We sometimes borrow him here though. Hand out items to kids, fire prevention paraphernalia for adults.

There's one at the McKinley Road/Glenmore Road junction.
I also saw a smaller one on Mt. Boucherie today.

Do we really need more signs to remind us?

No one wants to burn the place down and possibly face legal issues so whatever the heck grabs your attention the most.
Hell if we can have a signs about mussels here and there why not some eye catching fire prevention signs.

We don't use Smokey as much any more because Smokey Bear promotes awareness and safety. Instead of telling people to be responsible with their fires as Smokey would do, we instead ban them outright these days.
