Been a while since we flew........

Our Air Canada boarding info says that there is a deadline of 45 minutes before the departure time for checked baggage. Is that for real at YYF? Is that a firm cut-off time?

I guess that depends on whether you want your luggage to get on the plane too.
Had some relative miss their flight in Kelowna because we though they had lots of time to get through security.
Turned out it was busy and slow.

Just to play it safe I'd say yes - not that YYF is busy in regards to security screening but Air Canada's policy for domestic check in and baggage drop is 45 minutes. If you decide to check in past that deadline they can deny you boarding without any monetary refund or rebooking.

You are required to be at the gate 20 minutes before boarding. If you have checked in on time and if security is busy or slow, the airlines are a bit more lenient if you haven't arrived at the gate by your boarding time.

It's been a while since I've travelled with luggage so I usually check in on my phone the day before and just make sure I'm at the gate at the appropriate boarding time.

And yes, it is a firm cut off time as you agreed to the terms and conditions for carriage when you purchased the ticket.

That's what we thought to but it can be at times so play it safe and give yourself lots of time!

As previous 2 poster mentioned, better to early then left seating waiting for another flight. Which of course will cost you even more money.

So that old say: Better to be the early bird, no worms but the flight you booked.

Haha it's called a "cut off" for a reason! They can literally deny you entry onto your flight if you miss certain cut offs, regardless of whether or not the plane is still boarding.

While I've never flown via Penticton, the information on AC website says 45 minutes for all flights within Canada. I've flown many, many, many times through many Canadian airports. No two check-ins are ever alike, even within the same airport.

I'm one of those people who checks in 24 hours in advance, on the dot (WestJet allows you to pick your seat within 24 hours of your flight, no charge)...and I'm physically at the airport about 30-40 minutes earlier than suggested if I can manage it. I've been in line to go through security for an hour during a random morning flight. Other times I've made it from my house in the upper mission and been sitting on the other side of security in under an hour (36 minutes is my record from home, parking in long-term, checking in, and going thru security).

I'm with you. I'm always at least an hour early. I've had to wait 30 minutes in Kelowna to go through security, and up to 45 min in other airports. Penticton isn't that stressful, but rules are rules and I'm usually an hour early there. Have a safe flight.

If the airline allows you to check in after the cut off time at a small airport - your luggage will make it. The true test of passing the cut off time will allow you to enjoy your undies at home because you might not be on the plane either ;)

Anyone remember this mess from a few years back? A man traveling to a doctors appointment in Vancouver (in a wheelchair) went to check in 26 minutes prior to departure.

I've flown 50-70 flights a year the past few years. WestJet boarding time is definitely boards 35 minutes prior to departure (according to all of my boarding passes) and I believe AC is between 30 and 35 minutes (I fly them less often and don't have a boarding pass handy).

Even if you manage to sneak through check-in and security after the 45 minute mark...do you really want to be that last guy waltzing onto the plane while everyone else watches?

WestJet is 30 min for boarding. The gate closes 10 minutes before the flight. Air Canada's gates close 20 minutes. If everyone who has checked in, has boarded the flight they can and do close the gate early.

Most airlines are very similar with times - but there are the odd variances especially in regards to some airports where more time may be required.
