Not just too sure what high visibility has to do with fire spread/growth. Hazard, RH, Temp, Wind, and Slope are factors in rate of fire spread.

I believe it simply means that it looks worse than it is.

How is the comparison not being realistic. How much does financial and emotional tolls to bad drivers take versus a forest fire. Pretty sure the cost to the economy is more and more people are injured in car accidents then forest fires.

Someone starting a forest fire is also supposed to be held accountable they are just harder to catch.

the firefighter that started the fire in Barrier got caught didn't he.

It is true that such a small percentage of people get got and virtually no costs are recovered.

I just think 'closing' the backcountry is pretty excessive. The people that are idiots are going to sneak up anyway. The people who aren't idiots and starting fires are going to respect the rules - so I don't think it would have any real effect except locking good people into bubbles.

I was only trying to make the point lots of things causes risk to people and property.

One car accident does not compare to one forest fire but start another thread if you want to debate it.

Believe he fessed up.

The point is this fire is human caused, totally preventable, puts lives and resources at risk and hard to recoup from the individual(s) responsible.

And if the forest was 'closed' I bet the idiots would still be up there while the good people sat on their couches and got fat.

Ha ha ha! Close the back country! That's a good one!!

Do you really think it's that easy? Just close up the gate and that's that?!

There's 55 million hectares of forest in BC, good luck trying to close it.

No one suggested it was easy but the areas around the proximity of a fire should it be out of bounds would allow authorities to detain and fine the trespassers.

I'll never be in favour of "closing the back country". (and I live in the back country, and have also been evacuated due to a wildfire) Closing the area surrounding an active fire? Sure, makes sense. Fining the heck out of boaters in the way of firefighting aircraft? Get on it!

[edit] Wanted to add that I would be fine with a ban on all motorized vehicles in the back country.

Closing the back country where a fire is, is a totally different thing. I can agree there, even though that would be tough to regulate.

Closing the back country in general during peak fire season, well good luck there!

As someone already said, and the same can be said with smokers, is that making these rules will only keep out the honest ones.

Used to be forest closures just about every year for the last couple of weeks of August, back in the 60s and 70s. Perhaps the entitled generation can't handle that, but I can, even as an avid fisherman and hunter. It was closed in 2003 for a while too, everywhere for everyone. We could hire patrols for significantly less than the cost of fighting just one of these needless fires.
