Re: Fort McMurray obliterated
a few years ago we were at Ellison provincial park and were enjoying a nice day at the beach as a family when suddenly a park ranger showed up and advised that we should get packed up. We started up the hill slowly, all laden with stuff and when we got to the parking lot we suddenly saw flames just a few feet up the hill! We made it to our cars and got on the road, but we were stopped as the fire was jumping the road. That was pretty scary stuff, just sitting there watching flames all around us. But it wasn't anything like Ft. McMurray. That was a full on firestorm.pepsilover wrote:I agree GB with all you said. Unfortunately, this 'one route out' business reminds me of the nightmare that is Glenrosa. During the fire of 2008 the evacuation was at a snail's pace and fire was blazing just blocks away. It's a weird feeling sitting in your car NOT MOVING when you know have to get the hell out of there.

We've had that up here in The Rich a few times too...it sure gives some of us a little insight into what the folks in Ft. Mc are going through.

All I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW!!! Love me my Canadians!!! Donated over 30 million bucks to Fort Mac by Friday morning!!
http://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/other/can ... spartandhp
<snip> TORONTO - People from across the country have banded together in what the president of the Canadian Red Cross says is an unprecedented "Canadian moment," donating $30 million by Friday morning to help the victims of the massive wild fire in Fort McMurray, Alta.
"Canadians are collectively coming together to show their care and compassion," Conrad Sauve said Friday.
"We have over 100,000 Canadians that have come to us with texts to donate. We're getting offers from every part of the country, including corporate Canada in terms of workplace (fundraising) campaigns."
About 14,000 families in need from the Fort McMurray area have registered with the Red Cross and that number is expected to grow.

This made me tear up with pride. Think I'll go belt out Oh Canada when they sing it before an NHL playoff game...oh darn, no Canadian teams in it this year. Oh well, I will belt it out anyway, during the Star Spangled banner.

Warm and windy again tomorrow, but it's the last day. Sunday it's forecasted to rain and the following days will be cool, hopefully it'll give the firefighters an opportunity to get some containment.
The fire covers an enormous area, it will take a very long time to contain. After the warm weather tomorrow it'll likely be much larger. The new fire to the east has also grown quite large.Sat, May 7 - A mix of sun and cloud. Widespread smoke. Wind becoming southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 near noon. High 26. UV index 5 or moderate.
Night - A few clouds. Widespread smoke. Wind southwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming light in the evening. Low 13.
Sun, May 8 - Showers. High 19.
Night - Showers. Low plus 4.

Applying for Employment Insurance (initial or renewal claims)
In order to serve citizens affected by this situation, a reference code has been put in place to facilitate and accelerate the processing of Employment Insurance (EI) claims. Affected workers are encouraged to apply for EI benefits online or in person, as soon as possible, even without a Record of Employment.
If you are an affected worker, please enter the following reference code online: 4812012016030516
This measure has been put in place to ensure that Canadians who are eligible for EI and unable to work because of the fires can access EI benefits when they need them most.
A dedicated line providing information on EI has been set up for affected workers. Those affected can call 1-800-206-7218 and choose option “6” to get information.

Lets hope it does, but I only see a forecast for a chance of rain in the 20% to 40% range and on only the Sunday, then the heat is forecasted to pick up again.Quailize wrote:Warm and windy again tomorrow, but it's the last day. Re: Fort McMurray obliterated
It's definitely that time of year again........
I remember during the Kelowna 2003 fires phoning my mother and we were both SO EXCITED because a few drops of rain had come down! Every day we all waited for rain. We had gone without any precipitation for three weeks or something like that. Manna from Heaven that rain was like! It was only a few drops but we were SO excited.
Probably a good idea to get papers and pictures loaded up in the car, or at least a first aid kit etc.
