It says it is 30% contained, as does the Castanet update.

Castanet update is 4:20 pm , Cord emergency update is 4:06 pm .


BC Gov update is 4:38pm which states the 60% contained figure.

UPDATE: 4:20 p.m.

Central Okanagan Emergency Operations says the Bear Creek wildfire is now 30 per cent contained.

The burned area is holding at an estimated 52.5 hectares.

Wonder what it is at then....anyone know for sure?

Its a forestry fire so go by what their figures show.

Castanet gets their info from Cord emergency, Cord emergency gets their info from the BC Forest service. Want the most up to date go to the source. True with a lot of things.

Did they catch any of the rain on that side of the lake? Sure hope so, such a beautiful area to see burnt up.

It was over ripe for being burnt up.

That hillside had a duff layer of about 8" of needles and twigs. Undergrowth was choking everything.

It traditionally burned every 8 - 15 years, as it's a type NDT4 that needs regular, low intensity burns to be productive wildlife habitat. https://www.for.gov.bc.ca/tasb/legsregs ... chap2c.htm

Unfortunately, years of fire suppression and no interest from governments to maintain ecosystems in their natural states with controlled burns leads to explosive, destructive fires.

Time to lobby your MLA and demand that they get to work on this!

I'd like to second what Rwede said above. Lots of the photos and video I saw seemed to indicate it was principally the low to ground fuels that burnt. Many of the trees were left unscathed. Mother nature's way of removing that fuel. Perhaps this year's wet summer led to abnormally dense growth of grasses that only recently dried out. Fuel management is key. Either we do it, or MN does it for us

OK so why am I seeing smoke again on the bear Creek fire

On any larger fire you will see flare ups days after the fire is guarded and perimeter mop has taken place. These are probably hot spots down in the roots of stumps and trees which work their way to the surface. Patrol crews traverse the fire daily looking for and extinguishing these hot spots. Soon they will start to infra red scan the fire, if they have not started already. Any hot spots found are marked with a large spike with ribbon tied to it and a GPS recorded for the patrol crews.
