So that's 2 fires in the okanagan today and one in Princeton. Any bets all of them are human caused?

The cause of the Kokanee Road fire has been determined.

Vernon deputy fire chief Lawrie Skolrood said the fire was caused by a downed power line.

The rest of the week and the weekend should put a real damper on the fire season, at least for anything above rank 2, according to what I see of Castanet weather:

http://www.castanet.net/weather/Kelowna

And Environment Canada projects this moist weather right into Monday and according to the 14 day trend unsettled well into September:

https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/bc-48_metric_e.html

Had we have had the build up this year like the last few years some of the fires we had in August could have been very serious.

There has not really been much of a fire season in September for a few years now. Back in the past I have worked on and supervised some very large and aggressive fires well into September.

Trapp, do you recall any major fires that started in September?

I do recall several in the Cariboo back in the 70's up to probably 200 hectors (500 acres). Back then fires were named, not numbered. Any of the September ones in the Okanagan in more recent years mostly started end of August burning well into September.

I guess it's possible that with climate change, September is now August. October is now September

Peachland in 2012 was a high rank fire in September. Bear creek fire in September 2011. The 2003 fire carried on into September. Those 3 years had very dry August's followed by warm and dry weather in September. Like trapp said, if we get the rain that's forecasted over the next week then things should be fine for the rest of the year. Much cooler night temperatures and more moisture in the morning this time of year.

It's very rare but the western fire season can continue on for months if the conditions allow it. Look up the Spokane fires of 1991, destroyed 100 homes on October 16th.

Interesting that you should mention that. In our area the summer climate has shifted. September used to be like May, but now it's more like June.

As for September fires, I can find historical data online as far back as 2002. Largest on record in BC (starting after August):
