The picture castanet added to the article is painful to look at. Why would you have a campfire so close to dry grass like that?

If it's burning away from structures, they should let it burn.

That area needs to have a good fire to restore the natural NDT4 ecosystem and provide some much-needed wildlife habitat, especially ungulate winter range, and reduce the fuel load.

That hill is very combustible right now because we've suppressed fires there for far too long - any wonder why we've had 4 or 5 significant fires there in the past few years???

The area quite likely does need to be burned off as has been said. Nonetheless, if it is established that the person who has the campsite has caused this wildfire, he/she/they should be charged criminally for sure. These human caused wildfires cost us way too much in dollars and in destroyed resources.

Presuming the fire was indeed started by campfire, looks like those new BC Laws will be put to the test ... sounds like someone's about to be made an example ...

http://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/indus ... y-of-fines

Couple possibilities ...
Wildfire Act violation ticket fines (effective April 1, 2016)
* Section 3 (2), Fail to extinguish burning substance: $575
* Section 5 (2) (a), Fail to extinguish fire: $575
* Section 7 (2), Fail to abate fire hazard: $1,150
Hopefully they're cumulative ...

If they want to put the fire out, they'd be wise to put lots of equipment on it and deal with it while it's still beside the lake.
They fought a lakeside fire out of the manual to the letter once and they were still putting it out 20 miles and millions of dollars later.

If it's where I think it is, it's on the other side of Westside Road, not beside the lake.

Shawn Lafond stumbled upon the beginning of the Westside Road wildfire at 12:20 p.m, when it was about 50 square metres and growing.

Lafond and a friend noticed smoke while driving by on their way to Fintry, and called 911 when they saw flames.

"There was a tent and a fire pit, for a small campfire, but then it looked like they had a spot where they had a bonfire above it," Lafond said. "It looked like maybe they had a bigger fire throughout the night and then let that log smoulder or something."

He said a man who lived in the neighbourhood came up after fire crews had arrived and told him there had been people camping in the area for about three weeks. None of the campers were in the area when Lafond arrived.

Lafond said the tent was full of belongings, but it's not known if the owners have returned.

The fire continues to burn an area of 2.5 hectares, and the BC Wildfire Service has now classified it as "held," meaning it is no longer growing.

Five air tankers continue to drop water on the blaze, along with 26 BC Wildfire Service firefighters on the ground.

Two fire investigators are on scene. The BC Wildfire Service has not yet released an official cause of the fire, but Lafond says it was pretty clear to him what had happened.

The tent is visible from Westside Road.
