Castanet has a video currently posted entitled "Fire 1 Km from Homes". At the 57 second mark you can see a deer bolt from the fire just as it gets started. Damn deer...hanging around smoking and causing trouble again.
Someone has to say it.

It's disheartening to know that someone could have such disregard for others. People could easily get trapped by a fire in a busy park like that. Spend your life in prison knowing your actions ended a life. It's not a joke.

At around 4:00 pm, while observing the fire through binocs from the west side of the lake... you guessed it.. there was a least one person in civilian clothes, above the fire, to the north.

The park was open to hikers, but not vehicular traffic. It wouldn't be unusual to see hikers caught off guard by the rapidly spreading fire - while hiking above or below the fire start.

We were in Summerland most of the day and missed the whole emergency. I distinctly recall having turned the radio on from Sun-Oka to Thornhaven, between 4:15 and 4:30 and heard that the fire "was not close to homes" and my bs Meter went off because thanks to Walter Gray Knox Mt. is full of homes where they should not be. Imagine my surprise when I learned where it really was and less than 1 km from homes. Not.

In this video you can SEE a guy in black, looks like on a bike or motorcycle or running fast and moments later the fire starts.

So is this the same fire bug who lit the nighthawk fire?

The up date. It's really an emergency to catch this person or these people before more damage and homes are lost.

Thank goodness winds were calm yesterday or things could have been whole lot worse.

If parks like Knox Mountain are going to be kept open for the public to frequent and enjoy, during these times when the fire hazard is high or extreme, some steps need to be taken to protect those places and to increase the possibility of identifying those responsible for wildfires starting. It seems to me that it would be a very simple and [inexpensive] tactic to pass a bylaw that would require anyone entering the park to fill in a visitor form and to leave the original in a box for that purpose at the access points for the park. If retaining a copy for production to a police or conservation officer, or two a city parks or city works employee was also mandatory, this would help to identify persons who were in the park on that date and their time of entry, etc. Anyone checked in the park who was unable to produce their registration copy would be subject to a fine. The suggestion is not that park visitors would have to pay any fee to enter, just that they complete a simple registration before using the area. This, or some variation of this process might be useful... certainly in identifying persons who were in the area to identify possible witnesses, etc. This Bylaw/Process would only apply during high risk periods....

Already bylaws that state one can't smoke in parks - that's not going so well. Closing parks to the public have fallen on deaf ears. This idea won't work either.

Pretty difficult for the public to help when castanet plaster their yellow banner right over top of the video in the actual spot where the guy is running

Anybody up to no good will simply not sign a visitor card, and how do you police that?

Hunt them down with pitchforks. An angry mob is required.

So , I have to wonder...... Was the camera zoomed in on that exact spot before the fire started , or did they just zoom in on that spot from the larger image that you see at the end of the video ? I would assume the later , but the clarity and lack of pixilation has me wondering.

My point was that under extreme fire risk circumstances, people using these parks should be required to complete a registration card when they are entering the park. That was the authorities would have access to a list of potential witnesses who could help with investigations. Patrols in the park could ask for their forms, so anyone who decided to enter and not log their visit would be at risk of being checked and fined. It wouldn't be expensive and most people who use these parks would likely be more than willing to cooperate. Having a daily record of people using the parks could not hurt.
