Category 3 fires to be prohibited in Cariboo Fire Centre
4/10/2018 4:07 PM
WILLIAMS LAKE - Effective at noon on Monday, April 23, 2018, Category 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.

Specifically, prohibited activities that would constitute a Category 3 open fire include:

* any fire larger than two metres high by three metres wide.

* three or more concurrently burning piles no larger than two metres high by three metres wide.

* one or more burning windrows.

* burning of stubble or grass over an area greater than 0.2 hectares.

Anyone conducting a Category 3 fire anywhere in the Cariboo Fire Centre's jurisdiction must extinguish any such fire by noon on April 23, 2018. This prohibition will remain in place until Sept. 29, 2018, or until the public is otherwise notified.

This prohibition is being implemented due to an increased risk of "holdover" fires at this time of year. Holdover fires may smoulder undetected for a long time underground, before flaring up as temperatures rise.

This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

This prohibition does not ban Category 2 fires, which include one or two concurrently burning piles no larger than two metres high by three metres wide, or the burning of stubble or grass over an area less than 0.2 hectares.

This fire "ban" is not really a ban on fires. Just regulating fires: sizes and numbers. No biggie.

I see it in the same vein as gun control in the USA.

No one is taking away your guns. There are just a few regulations that should be in place in order to get a gun.

Fine, fine, I've updated the title to be more accurate...

I was disappointed too. Wimpy, weak kneed, wishy washy. Some fire ban. There goes more forest.

This is only the start.

Fire Bans and Restrictions
Fire bans and restrictions are implemented as local fire hazards or dangers, weather conditions and fire activity demand, to help to protect the population of, and property and values in, British Columbia.

Conditions in the cariboo and kamloops centres are about 6 weeks ahead of last year. I guess it depends on what June weather brings but I'm assuming we'll probably start seeing more bans soon if the road continues in this direction.

It seems like they're holding off on the campfire ban longer than usual this year.

They say "soon" in this article for a campfire ban. Why not just do it now, and not burden our crews with more than what they already have? https://www.castanet.net/news/Kelowna/2 ... re-ban-yet

They always do this. they should ban campfires from June 21 to September 21. No one needs a campfire...use a Propane campfire or Propane BBQ....

Oh but its not the same without a fire when we go camping...same with the forest...It wont be the same when it burns down.

Almost no fires are started by camp fires. I can't think of a single major fire that was. Camp fire bans do almost nothing to stop fires.

2003 Chilko lake fire? 2011 Wallow fire in Arizona? There's been a few large ones started by campfire.

You need to only look at last year to prove that. Camp fire ban for most of the summer, yet was one of the worst years ever. Majority of the fires happened after the ban. This year has been a lot better, yet there is no camp fire ban.

The differences between this year and last year are due to the weather. Wetter and cooler weather at the start of this July delayed the fire risk a couple weeks later than last year. Lightning caused fires on July 7th and prolonged dry conditions were why last year was so bad.

Gottfriedson Mountain fire was started by a campfire.

Exactly. The fires are due to weather. Camp fire ban is not going to change the weather. As evidence by yesterday, the risk of fires is the same as last year, yet we have less fires even though there is no ban in place.
