Northwest Fires
Some of the ones up in the nechako area look real bad right now. Hard to tell exactly how far they've moved as the area in between some those red dots probably burned and cooled before the satellite could pass over again.

Seems like everything west of last year's fires is going up this year. It's a shame but maybe it'll clean up the pine beetle mess a bit.

Here is a friend's account of the fire coming through her community of Grassy Plains south of Burns Lake and how it's affecting the animals, the environment and the people...
Hi all so far all is fine at our house I have been busy hauling animals and helping others who were evacuated get their things out and prepare our place with tarps and sprinklers. There are controls at the ferry so if you go to the northside you may not be allowed back - depends on the day and the police - its a pretty subjective call. I had a permit to move animals so i went back and forth for a few days but now trying to help out on this side and prepare our farm with tarps and sprinklers and general junk clean up - it takes a wildfire to get Bob and I home to work on the place. So after this is done we'll have a few things tidied up. Too bad the dump isn't open!! So far only 2 homes have been lost to fire. There is a structural protection crew that goes to homes and sets up bladders, pumps and sprinklers. If you look in the right direction some of the homes look just like no fire has been through - a little black in the background. Ecologically this is kind of interesting to see the pattern of the fire - it leaves a lot of green patches and it kind of weaves around. In stands of mature forest it really takes off and the heat is so intense you can see the flareups from 50km away. But then it can slow right down and leave the tops of the trees green and just the undergrowth is gone. The bears are having a hard time with the smoke - they seem kind of lost and wandering around. I hope something is telling the critters where to go to be safe. Cattle have been bunching up and going to their homes. No one under the age of 18 is allowed and one kid was taken off the tractor at home and escorted to the ferry or his parents would have been charged. So Taylor and Morgan are with their Aunt Linda - we are so lucky to have family close by or I wouldn't be able to stay here and help get ready for the fire. I won't stay to see it but I'm pretty curious how it will all turn out. Others have stayed home to protect their farms and were successful.
