Curious...is that peat on fire, smouldering away?

Many sizeable fires aren’t considered OUT until January since the fire burns so deep.

Fire can remain dormant underground burning through root systems until the spring.

Yup. The elephant Hill fire flared up this summer, and wasn't determined to be out until August.

pretty cool how you can cut a tree open that looks just fine and when you do it is clearly on fire from the inside.
